Ok, so I moved to this town right, and I went to some local pool halls to feel them out. One of them has two tournaments a tuesday night 8ball and a wednesday night nineball.

Starting last week I started playng in the tournaments. At the beginning of the first 8ball tournament I asked what rules they play and they told me the basic outlay of the rules. They didn't say APA rules which is what the use they just said, it's call pocket on the eight and on banks and combos.

I also asked what rating system they used and the owner replied that they start everyone out as a B. I said oh ok. and he asked me if I was an A player and I replied yes. I'm not about hustling. So I win that tournament, but just before the final match, I went up and asked the TD, "Now, this guy has to beat me twice right?" HE replied, "No it's just the last match" I say ok and proceed to win. Now I will admit that I pretty much dominated. matches went 4-0, 4-0, 4-1, 4-0, 4-0.

Ok, now the next night isthe nineball tournament. In the very first match, I'm playing this girl and she fouls twice in a row. On my turn I walk over to the tournament director and ask if the three foul rule is in effect. His answer.....get this......" Whatever you want to do". Ok so I go over and tell the person I'm playing who seemed to have an attitude ever since we started playing that if she fouls again that it's a loss of game. She gets a bigger attitude and complains to the owner, who says that that is not the case and I say to him that his son said that it was. I let it go and end up losing that match. His son then comes over to me and says "You know we don't play with any of those "PRO RULES" we don't have any pros that play here except for maybe you"

Now up to this point they haven't once said that they use APA rules nor do they even have a copy of APA rules there.

I come all the way up the losers bracket and am playing the mfinal match and after I'm up 3-0 on the guy he starts to rack again, And I say oh are we going to four now, and he replies "yeah to 4 and then to 3. Ok so I beat him the last game so that we're playing to 3 for the final place. I go over to the counter and talk to the owner and say that I had specifically asked the previous night whether the final match was double for the losers bracket and was told no, the final match i the final match. He said no you have to be beat twice.

Ok fine, it throws me off a little and I lose. Ok I get second place not a big deal.

Now to the point of this thread. I show up to the eightball tournament last night. Again I ask what the rules are, again they say it's BIH on any foul but after the break and it's call pocket on the 8 and everything not obvious like banks and combos.

Everything is fine until I play the same girl from the previous nineball tournament who seemed to have a big problem with me for some unknown reason. Now she's getting two balls off the table from me. Don't ask me why this is the spot. Well there was a big to do at the beginning of the tournament because a couple of people specifically asked, including me, if it was an open table after the break and they said no, it's whatever you make. Then right before the match with this girl, I was talking to the owner about it and he said no it's APA rules and it's always open after the break. Ok so fast orward back to the match. I make a stripe on the break but don't have any shots open and before I can even think she grabs two solids and starts to drop them, and I said wow wow wow, I get the option of going for solids after the break. She gets pissed off and now she also had the owner come over to the table to watch the match, unbeknownst to me. I though t he was just interested. Well, in another game I'm already up 2-0, she completely misses a ball and it goes two rails and falls in the side. I step up to the table and run out. she gets pissed off and starts breaking down her cue at which time I say what are you doing I still have to win one more game. Then owner comes up and says that she is wquiting because of a swelled up hand and asks me why I stepped to the table when she made the ball in the side. I said that it was my understanding that it was call pocket on the not obvious shots and that that shot was obviously slop. HE then said that slop counts and that I shouldn't have stepped to the table.

Now keep in mind that I have never played league in my life and the only BIH rules of 8 ball I know are BCA or IPT and there's no way that slop counts under those rules. Neither the owner or her said anything to me when I stepped to the table or even asked me what I was doing. She just huffed up and broke down her cue and left. Then the owner's son is talking and says that he thinks the best thing is that if I don't come to today's nineball tournament or to either of next week's tournaments. I reply with that's not right and it's obvious that people have a problem with my playing ability and why don't you just raise my rating if they have a problem with me winning...

Well, this whole fiasco pissed me off and I ended up going two and out from there for third place and I still don't get to come to tonight's tourny or either of next week's.

Do you guys think this is right? or am I right to think they need to learn how to direct tournaments. I've ran several local tournaments and they;ve never been run like this...

Sounds like they need to print out a rule sheet and stick to it.



Flying by the seat of one's pants in regards to the rules never comes out good.


Screw their "tournament", it sounds like they are more concerned with keeping the masses happy than actually having a good player play who knows the rules.
 
It's obvious that the pool hall is simply not interested in catering to clientele who take the game seriously. Regardless that it's their fault for having no clue what rules they play, they have every right to ask you not to play anymore. I suggest you find a pool hall that's accomodating to your mentality on the game.
 
I take it there's no other pool hall in town? Sounds very bush league to me. By the way, what's the entry fee/pay out? Sounds like everyone is taking this pretty seriously for a weekly tourny. At my skill level, I see my $5/$10 entry fee to be the price of a pool lesson. If I can make it though a few rounds and get trounced by some one like you, I've got my money's worth.

I think they're going to continue to do things the way they want. You need a larger pond.

That's not the APA rule. They play you must take what you make on the break, unless you make one or more of each. They also play slop counts as I recall (haven't played APA in a while). Whatever these folks are doing - and, to me it sounds like "bar rules" of their own devising - I can't see how it is TAP, BCA, APA or IPT!
But what the hell, man, you're new in town and you just beat the snot out of everybody! You were expecting a heroes welcome? ;) Bob is probably right, find a bigger pond.

Have a serious private talk with the owner. Accept no BS. If they won't clarify the rules and be fair/consistent with you (the new guy) don't go back. They don't deserve you.

you are getting screwed and should heed the advice of Jigger.
If they can't allow you the same set of rules as everyone else then they certainly don't deserve you there.

Jaden. Did you move to a small town in Oklahoma???? Sounds like some of the "bar tourneys" around here! LMAO I don't know how many times I've ran into similar situations playing in bar tournaments. If you can run more than three balls, then it seems the rules will magically change on you, not just from week to week, but from game to game.

I always thought there should be a Federal Law that requires all bars and pool rooms to post the rules they play by... even if they're BS Bar Rules, they should be clearly written and posted.

The federal government shouldn't be involved in 90% of the issues they mettle in now.

BTW, there are bigger fish to fry in the larger pond!
 
What you have just described is exactly why I don't play in local tournaments and seldom play in bars anymore. Too much drama and too little understanding of the game.
 
You played in three tournaments and came in first, second and third and you are complaining. Imagine all the complaining the local players are doing about this new hustler in town who is robbing their tournaments. Keep it up and the tournaments will probably dry up.

You are missing the point.


It doesn't matter how he placed, what matters is the fact that they keep screwing with the rules mid-stream, that is the problem.

Shooter, surely you were kidding when you asked if I was kidding!!! Of course, I was kidding about a Federal Law. Hell, it would take congress decades to decide on the Congressional Rules of 8-Ball, then they'd be so overly complicated that nobody would understand how to play the game!!!

Now, I was NOT kidding about pool rooms and bars posting the rules, esp if there are local exceptions to BCA, APA, VNEA rules, or whatever... I had the BCA rules posted in my pool room when I had it, and kept copies of the BCA book in the club... no arguments, no misunderstandings... but a Federal Law. No, I was DEFINITELY kidding about that. Didn't think I had to tag an emoticon on something like that, but maybe should have, so here ya go... :D :D :D :D :D :D Hope nobody else thought I was serious!

Bob... only serious about playing Playing Pool, Sex and 12 year old Bourbon!

PS: JADEN, you might consider getting a copy of either BCA or APA rules and offering them to the owner or whoever acts as the TD. If they read "real" rules and understand them, there's a snowballs chance in hell they might like them.

As I was leaving, I said well see you guys tommorrow night, and the owners son said, you're not going to play in the tournament tommorrow or in either of next week's either. I said as I was walking out the door that I expected them to do the same with anyone else who won more than two tournaments in a row.

The thing is that they have a couple of strong players there and they have higher rating scales. I've tried to explain to them how the spots they are giving up are not good for lesser players because the people who get those spots don't know how to use them properly and that in 8 ball if you want to give spots either give them games in a race or give the option of taking their balls down whenever they want.

The thing is that they shouyld be willing to use my experience to make it better for them and instead they are alienating me by treating me this way. I told his son the first time he said he didn't want me in the next three tournaments that instead or atleast he should move me up in their rating scale. Although since that means I would really just be giving them more balls off the table, it's more of a spot for me. lol. Or they need to institute an official rule that if you place in the money in two tournaments in a row you have to skip a week. and not just say no, you're too good, so you can;t play every week, but if joe schmucatelli over there wins 8 in a row, HE can still play whenever he wants.

What are you doing playing with them? Your beating them 4 to 0, you obviously play a lot better then they do, leave the tournament alone and let them have their fun. Just go there to practice or match up and be sociable and stop beating on weak players, what do you get out of that? There are tournaments all over town I don't play in, it would seem silly even if they let me play, they are just fun players having a night out, I don't want to spoil it for them. Just my opinion

I was planning on printing out the apa and BCA rules and taking them down to them. I actually think that they are obligated to play by APA rules, though because the tournaments are subsidized by Miller or something. They add money. The entries are only 7 a piece, but Miller adds money and pays green fees to the house. I think what it boils down to is that they are afraid of scaring away some of the regulars, but if that's the case then what they should do is insitute a rule that you have to skip a week or a tournament if you win.
