hey sean! i heard you finally unloaded that "snap dragon"! good move! congrats!

Not one of my favorites, but at least it's a one of a kind work of art, if people were educated as to how hard that cue was to make and what real 4th axis cue making is that cue would be appreciated. The more you talk Jeff the more you're ignorance shines, although for a guy who has tried to by a reputation as a cue expert you've picked up some knowledge in your short 12 months of cue collecting. It's too bad the guys who got in your ear early didn't know as much as you think you know now. Maybe when you put in your time you'll be able to speak on the topic. LOL The more you talk the more we learn about you. Lucky for you daddy's money can cover up lots of your mistakes, I think many here would love to have unlimited funds and a small amount of knowledge.

If you can get someone to make a bad knockoff of it and call it a tribute maybe Jeff would buy it LOL, oh did I forget you'd have to jack the price up a bit so he felt he was getting an expensive cue. LOL

was a joke jimmy boy!
i was about to buy the cue when sean originally bought it! and also tried to buy it from sean! unlike you i think it's one of his nicer works although not nearly as pricey as the ones you buy!
and i have been collecting for 15 and a half months now! i can't help it if i just pick things up quicker than you!

Don't be sorry, many people agree but don't have the balls to post this type of stuff. I may not agree with you, but I do enjoy the honesty. I'm not one of those guys who thinks these types of forums should be reserved for only good words. One problem I do have is when the person who has the courage to post their names doesn't have the courage to post his own.*

Hey Jimbo! Thanks for the supportive words. I remember some time ago, Cornerstone posted his personal playing cue (at that time) and it was a Richard Black. I made a statement about not liking Black's cues and questioning whether or not it would play well (it was like 75% ivory and 100% ugly) and it turned into a 5 or 6 page thread that even involved a few threats from one party to another! It was kind of funny actually.
Anyway, I know my opinions are my own.

Oh, and like you said about posting a cuemaker's name and not my own?
My name is Brian Neill. And I have no regarets regarding the things I may have said on these forums.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to All!

I even have more respect for a guy like Paul Fanelli who even though the butterfly style is taken from long ago he's taken it and put his own stamp on it and is doing some of the best stuff today IMO. You can hold up one of his cues from across the room and we'd all know who made the thing.

Tap tap tap!!! Paul's unique style is much more than butterflies between points. They come down from the joint, tiny, tasteful swirls of color, also reflected in myriad ways in the buttsleeve...and the way he crosses the points on his very fancy cues is simply awesome, those veneers running up to the joint sleeve.

Design-wise, those combinations are the most creative elements to grace a cue for a long, long time. I'm not talking about a scrimmed shark or a mural of dancing Chinese children. Like Jimbo said, using traditional methods and techniques, he created something entirely new, and entirely pleasing to the eye.

artists that whine about no good artwork in cues but dont do any themselves and they need new glasses  :D

you wanna pay me to do one for you?

you'll have to pay up the wazzoo too. i'm not going to waste my time learning how to do scrimshaw for the f**k of it:)

It looks like quite a few people on the forum share my opinions on what they don't like it cues. I hate rounded inlays, MOP, abalone, uneven points (that are supposed to be even...lol), floating points, california buckeye burl (there are some that are interesting but most of the examples I've seen are buck ugly!), downward facing point in the butt sleeve, everything but the kitchen sink designs, all ivory cues, poorly done veneers and several other things that I could list if I spent more time thinking about it.

Sorry for the on topic post...

Zack

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion of this scrim work?!

I remember the ruckus you caused, tsk tsk.

My name is Roger Aye and I abhor cues made by Richard Black. The execution is so far south of par the only thing worse is the hit, which is cringe-inducing.

Me no like thick nickle silver/aluminum rings.
They're fuggly.
A logo and a signature on the same cue.
Make up your mind which one to have.

The alignment barrel of the joint screw being visible. Ugh!
I only want to see threads.

Rounded points and inlays.

to begin with, the artist can't draw.

but really, the problem goes beyond that. as another pointed out, it is a "scratchy" medium. by contrast, for instance, i prefer engraving. it's decorative, bolder, and more graphic, which is better suited for what it's trying to do(decorate an ivory window). and as i mentioned, i don't like "pictures" in a cue anyway(just a personnal pref).

if i HAD to have scrimshaw, the whole cue would have to be ivory, points/grip/butt, maybe even the nose. ie,,make the scrimshaw the centerpiece, not the cue. the cue, then, would merely be a vehicle.

btw, i don't envy the artist who had to do those portraits. they're not easy.

Lisa, I too don't particularly care for slotted diamonds, per se. But.....having said that, you can tell a lot about a cuemaker's inlay skills by looking closely at their slotted diamonds. You'll be surprised how many will have noticeable glue lines with an overall sloppy, loose fit. From what I've seen, Skip's ivory slotted diamonds are about the best out there, plus he's actually cutting the inlays and creating the slots (i.e. not store bought like a lot of the new acrylic imitation MOP or abalone). When a slotted diamond work is done to this high a standard, then IMO you cannot go wrong.

Sean

Totally agreed here. While I don't care for notched MOP diamonds, ivory diamonds looks a LOT better, especially when matched with an ebony background. Here's my Gilbert's ivory diamond:

AFTER READING THIS THREAD, I FEEL LIKE AN OUTCAST.

I LOVE MOTHER OF PEARL.

I DO AGREE WITH MOST OF THE DISLIKES THOUGH, I DISLIKE....

FLOATING POINTS
CUES MADE MORE BY A COMPUTER PROGRAM THAN BY A PERSON
MALACHITE OR TURQUISE(SP)
MORE THAN ABOUT 50 INLAYS
PINK IVORY(IT'S A LITTLE FEMANINE FOR MY TASTES)
THE UNI LOCK JOINT
IMITATION ANYTHING (IF IT'S NOT IVORY, CALL IT PLASTIC)
CUEMAKERS THAT DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK.THE GUYS THAT KNOW ME, KNOW WHO I'M REFERING TO. HE'S BEEN MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD A FEW TIMES ALREADY IN A NEGATIVE MANNER(HINT, HINT)
