What do you use to clean your shaft?

just waxing

Is there any benefit (or detriment) to periodically wiping a shaft with a dry cloth and then applying an automotive wax or polish? That would seem to be an easy way to keep the shaft clean (assuming you start with a clean shaft), protected and sealed.

IMO
I think wax helps keeps the shaft clean, it suspends the dirt and the grim.
That's why I use denatured alcohol to clean the dirty old wax off of the shaft
instead of just waxing over it and pushing the suspended dirt and grim further into the wood grain and or the wood pours.

Even if you are just using wax I would still clean with denatured alcohol.

The wax I use is

Once i have a shaft burnished and sealed I clean it with a regular piece of white paper.
I had a used shaft show up the other day I put like 2 drops of water into a magic eraser and it took all the blue out of it then used some of the plastic burnishing sheets.
