I think all you would need to do is find a place to hold it. Then ante up about 25k for added money and let them select a date that is mutually agreeable....that is all it takes for the men or upa.... post the cash and go at it..............................................mike

Thanks mike i really had no clue. But it does make sense.

It would seem that a Casino would be one of the requirements.

Most of the WPBA events are held in Casinos.

Samstown Casino
Viejas Casino
Riviera Casino
Par-A-Dice Hotel Casino
Seminole Hard Rock Casino
Casino Windsor
Sandia Casino
Chinook Winds Casino

Magoo's Billiard Club (real Pool hall)
5002 South Memorial Tulsa, OK 74145

I dont think a casino is a requirement. I think it is just casinos that are willing to put up that kind of cash and that can see a return on that kind of investment.

I do think the WPBA has some kind of minimum seating requirement-something like 2-300 seats for fans.

What you would need is a good promoter and a really good backer. Thats it.
The rest would fall into place.

If you are serious, call the WPBA office in Charlotte, NC, at (704) 344-8664.

Folks,

The one thing that everyone has missed is.....ESPN. It costs big! The women want to be televised. Add $30 - $40K minimum to make it happen. Put it together with a sufficient purse and you can see why only casino's can afford to put on an event. Those are the strengths and the weakness of the WPBA. If either supporter goes, there is potential for no events. Any Women Pro's on our forum care to comment on who pays for ESPN? They should be paying the WPBA for the programing.

I'm not a woman or a pro, but, to the best of my knowledge, the WPBA pays ESPN to televise tournaments.
I agree, it should be the other way around.

I do not have specifics on any of the contract details....but I do know that the WPBA pays for the production costs of each show. ESPN does not pay for anything. Wish I had more info, but that's about it.

In order to have a WPBA event in your state, you would need to have a venue willing to pay a certain amount of money, promote the event locally/regionally, and provide the space/seating to make the event successful. You could either contact the WPBA office, or you can send me a private message and I will can put you in touch with our events coordinator.

According to the room owners at Northfield Billiards (just SE of Cleveland and N of Akron) they want to know how much money is in it for them and how little do they have to work to hold a tournament. I am being fecious in my answer. I can't answer for other pool rooms, but when you have 12 diamond tables and 8 gold crowns and the owners could careless about filling those tables (this is one of the best rooms in Cleveland (layout and nice tables)) and filling up there poker/ramika table is more important to them. They held a wheelchair tounament and didn't let anyone know they were holding one and players from accross the globe came to play in it. So if the WPBA want to hold a tournament in Ohio I would suggest a room in Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati or Mentor. Ask Mike Janis, why Northfield billiards isn't hosting his 25K Viking Tournament? (Which is ashame because that 25K tournament was at their room 2 years in a row and was fantastic and Mike did all of the work). I would love to see a women pro tournament here. Gail Grecar is a professional here in Cleveland and always ask NF to host a tournament but she keeps getting the same response. What is in it for US!

Hi Melissa,

I was not trying to be a jerk about the ESPN thing. There are way too many players out here in fandom who do not understand the real costs of producing a tournament. Even a local weekly event. We both understand the value of our game to both ESPN and the venues. It is a shame that we, as participants, are so poorly rewarded for our efforts. WPBA (or UPA) should never have to pay to provide entertainment for an audience. The audience should pay to see us. Incidently, congradulations on your great showing in New Mexico. It ain't a win yet, but I'd take a third against that crew anyday. Keep on chuggin'. ;)

The owner you are referring to is KK. He really doesn't have a large stake in the business at NF he is more of a player than an owner. The majority owners are pushing him out and will eventually close the business in a about 18 months when there lease is up. None of the owners care about pool and that is why no big tournaments will be held there any longer. The Viking tour usually holds its Finale in November and now will have it next year (who know where) do to the fact that these lame room owners got too greedy. I am sure this is the crux of alot of rooms in the US.

Yeah your right just play, that is who that was. i am sorry to hear about the situation there. I liked that place i hate to hear about stuff like that but what can you do. Come up to players in port clinton and play lol. talk at you later.

Hi Kid -

I did not think that you were being a jerk at all. I honestly did not take offense to any remark you made.

I was just trying to give any and all information that I had regarding your question/statement about the WPBA and ESPN deal. I realize I don't know a lot about the whole production deal, but I was putting my knowledge out there in order to help shed a tiny bit of light on how it worked.

Thanks for the congrats....and I will do my best to keep chuggin! I will be hitting the pool room tonight to practice with my coach! Onwards and upwards....3rd place is great....but it isn't winning!

All the best,
Melissa
