What games should be included when considering the ALL AROUND best player?

To me, well-rounded means you're good everything, not you're excellent at everything... so I would not include Banks in the list.

Not knocking it, it's a great game, but it's narrowly focused on one skill. You'll see banks come up in 1p and other games so I don't think banks is necessary in the list.

If a player wins the world straight pool, predator 10b, dcc 1 pocket all in the same year... I won't say "yeah but how did he do at banks?"...to me, that's the all around best player that year.

And, much as I love 8b, there's no skills in 8b that aren't already well covered in 14.1.

Agreed that these are the five games. This is the main forum, so the thread is presumed about pool, so we need not consider games like 3-cushion, Russian pyramid, snooker, etc. Also agree that 14.1 requires the most complete skill set of the five, with one pocket a very close second.

To my knowledge, only Nick Varner owns a world championship in all five of these disciplines within pool.

Deleted an overly long and "splitting hairs" post. Sorry SJM.

All games with a cue in hand count, not only pool games The more you can handle, better for you.
Could UK pool players be as good at American pool without ever even trying snooker? Would Efren ever be as good at defense and multi rail shots without ever playing carom billiards? I don't think so.

I have been told by many people that full rack bank pool is the only true testament to bank pool. And that short rack banks is a perversion of the true game.

I have also seen tournaments where you score 1 point per rail on a pocketed bank.

Same goes for what 9 Ball has become. When you are encouraging slop you get a faster game but a game that requires less skill.

I wish all tournaments at a pro level would go to 10 Ball format. Leave 9 Ball in the bar leagues where it has flourished.

I would pick 10 Ball. One Pocket, Full Rack Banks and Straight Pool to the list for the Top Four games for All Around Player.
