What gives?

I like to read news from the bbc website. I went to the sports section and looked at the snooker news and they wouldn't let me watch a video interview with Barry Hearn because I live in North America. How do they expect the sport to grow if they keep denying us access to videos and streams? Most folks don't have the time or desire to research all the latest streaming sites to watch this stuff. Why can't it be easy? It makes no business sense for them to do this.
 
The BBC is supported by tax payer pounds (no commercials) hence only people that pay taxes are allowed to watch some bbc video clips, or snooker streams.

Alternatively: Get a UK proxy!

If that is the case why can I read the rest of their website?

It's the BBC !! Who knows what goes on in their minds ???
 
BBC, SKY, FOX, HBO, Showtime and others have complicated contracts with each other that by implication screw those of us in the U.S., Canada and UK that want to watch something from their programs on the web. Those networks are selling each other programs and making exclusion deals to keep the internet from undercutting their programming schedules and advertising. Get a VPN program that spoofs your IP server location...their cheap, legal and available on line. Then you can log on as being from any country you want and will get you past all these contractual issues.
