What I learned from the Wrist thread (long)

I see dead balls

This is my first ever thread so I guess an introduction is in order.
First a bit about me. I've played this game now on and off for about 10 years. For about 5 years mostly straight pool. I've had some ok runs around 70 balls, nothing spectacular, mediocre I guess. I started playing seriously again about a year ago and decided I was going to change my stroke to a more snooker-like action. I've always used a wrist snap and snooker grip but now I tried to incorporate the snooker swing and stance as well. I could feel my stroke getting straighter but the results did not follow. I got only 20-30 ball runs, kept missing break balls and difficult shots. After reading and participating in the wrist thread I experimented with CJ's techniqe, but it didnt work for me in normal play. Strangely i found out that I have always employed it on the break in 9ball and 8ball without even knowing it. I was certain that i snapped my wrist the opposite way!

Two things CJ said changed my technique completely: first he mentioned forming a "groove" in the hand to guide the cue and the other thing was that the stroke was all about moving the hand back and forth to the same position. I suddenly realized that with all the focus going to the elbow and wrist I was forgetting my hand. It turns out that subtle movements of the cue inside the hand just before the moment of impact was throwing my cue slightly off line and this was especially true in pressure situations, leading to missed breakballs and lack of consistency. As a result i immobilized my wrist on the stroke (at least for now) and have a firmer and more unchanging grip through the stroke. My stroke is shorter but i still get almost the same amount of spin and more feel since I have a firmer grip on the cue. I now only sight the shot and think about returning my hand to the same place and focus on the grip. Yesterday I had my first 50-ball run in what seems like forever and it was unfinished (had to leave due to other obligations).

I am very grateful to CJ Wiley for taking the time to interact with us, if it wasn't for his contributions and fresh perspective I might never have discovered this huge flaw in my stroke. It makes me wonder what could have been learned if even more pros started hanging out at this great site.

I would agere with most all of that.

Hey thanks for responding. I should probably have made a separate thread about innovators of pool! I was just so exited about the improvements I got following CJ's advice, I just had to share!

Glad to hear about the positive progress. I've used a lot of CJ's info, too. I'm glad he got past all the political correctness and sniping on the forum and decided to stick it out. I'm looking forward to hearing a bunch more, too! cool0037.gif

Best,
Mike

So did it turn out the wrists are actually a hidden power catalyst? Or are they just along for the ride?

Too early in the game for that determination. They're barely over 100 pages. Let them "hammer" it out for a few more thousand posts.

Lots of people wonder that and CJ had/has more tolerance than most pros who have come here and been knocked around.

I think now I am going to go and wade into the thread and see what I can learn from it.

If I am not mistaken I think that there is a way to see only CJ's posts.

I'd recommend CJ for AZBilliards "Man of the Year Award", if there was such a thing.

I have learned more from him then all of the books and other people's DVDs I have purchased. I'm glad he has chosen to stick around and share his valuable information with us.

As for the naysayers, give us a break, I want to learn how to improve upon my game and CJ has given us that. I don't learn anything from your negative comments. There are those of us that really appreciate the info he is divulging. Instead of complaining, if you are so righteous, then give us something we can work on. If not then -- well, you get my drift.

Mr. CreeDo,

Are you looking for, or hopeing for, a consencus from the AZB population?

Regards,

haha, for some reason the way you word this makes me want to call you Rick'n'Load.

I suspect you are being sarcastic here, CreeDo , but as a matter of fact[...]

It would be fun to know how many people actually gave the technique a fair try, and how many dismissed it without even trying it out (not saing this applies to you).

I was in fact joking, and no offense taken... some things I try before I dismiss them, but others just make so little sense to me that I dismiss them immediately. I haven't tried CJ's stuff yet... I have a lot of things to work on in my game, and many of them are clearcut, so I just work on the obvious stuff. If I run out of obvious things to fix, I'll start looking at the subtle ways I might improve my game.

He's one of the more patient guys I've seen. I don't think I've ever seen him get angry. I hope he sticks around too.

PS: you might want to adjust the color of that text in your signature, the white writing on the forums light gray background is really tough to read.

Listen, anybody other than CJ who has read that entire thread has a lot more free time on their wrists than I do.

Oh, sorry, no porn inten . . . I mean no pun intended!

I've read the whole thing, and i dont have a ton of free time. But I have been reading it since it started, so it doesn't take much time to catch up to the last couple days posts.

I would indeed take a breath before trying to tackle it all from the beginning at this point.
