What If There Were A Player Stock Market?

I'm sure you weren't implying "savors" as making somebody a scumbag. It's the nature of the beast. The prize money is so weak that near the end there are big differences in cash. Virtually every player in the game has probably made a savor at one time or another. It is their business and if they are getting staked obviously it should come out of their end of the money. Simple math would tell the investor if they got screwed out of money or not.

I agree with this. If a saver makes you a scumbag then I'm lower than worm shit

win a tourny and pay off 6 or 7 savers, nothing new.....

My definition of a scumbag is someone who fvcks people over.

Now you know so you dont have to worry about implications as its very clear.

Who cares what a player does with his end of the money or what a backer does with his? As long as the initial deal is honored. Personally I think savers are terrible for pool. Always have. I also know they will always be around. So just like anything else that factors into an investors decision on who he wants to put money behind. Personally I want my money on the guy who wants to win. If guys make it known thats how they play it will become known and it could benefit them.

Imagine what would be possible if everything involving money in pool didnt automatically begin with the idea that its impossible to trust people. That to me is what an open market could start to change because people who prove themselves a bad investment would be ostracized and people who build a solid reputation would be rewarded.

We are not talking about giant sums of money here. Its a sweat bet for the most part. There will always be things that go wrong. But look at the action forum here. For all of the bullsh!t that has happened there has been a ridiculous amount deals go down with no issues at all. To me I think it is possible in theory.

The end goal I would like out of something like this would be for companies to buy the entries for the players as a sponsorship. It would make total sense for a company to risk $500 against a 15%-20% return. If the guy they back takes top 5 they get their money back or make a little. If he makes top 10 they got it for half price and if he goes out of the money it still only cost them a third of what a full page ad costs. The end result ideally being now some players no longer pay any entry fees up front.

Imagine if you could play a tournament and only had to pay the entry fee if you cashed?

JCIN , I think your one of the great promoters of pool who has the insight it takes to put something like this together . You deal with sponsors on a daily basis and know what appeals to them. Thanks for what your trying to do

This is all an exercise in theory for me.

Greg mentioned the rough idea and I have been fooling around with it. There are some smart people on this forum so I wanted to see what a group could come up with. To me the thing that makes it even remotely possible is that it could be done for little to no money to start and all of the holes poked in it before it ever got off the ground.

I think it can be done. I'm pretty sure it wont though.

The quote of the week;

It has been proven through history there is nothing man can invent that some pool player somewhere can not ruin for everyone else.[/B]

Make it more like investing in stocks or (from the biz end), like a business selling stocks and you're on to something. Full financial disclosure would be expected. If the player dumps then he'll lose investors due to a lack of integrity. If he sells too much of himself then the stock becomes worthless. If the dividend payouts are lacking then investors bail and the stock crashes.

All investments are risky. But people who think they'll double their money overnight will give me some pure dee old fashioned comedy to read on these AZ threads for years.

I like the idea.

Unfortunately I think this is something that would only include pool enthusiasts like us on AZ. The prize money is just to low for outside investors to get in. The draw with poker is the WSOP Main that they all see on TV. I know 4 players from my town (a shit hole) that went out to WSOP (for majority of even 2 of them are still there) this year and sold themselves to local investors here. The investors for the most part have plenty of dough, and only 1 of them even plays poker. The poker players have a better sales pitch, if you will. Made it easy to get the stake together.

Hopefully someday this will change.

I see it as something very small. I think in the beginning only a few deals would happen. Its more a way for players and fans to connect and generate interest in whats happening at an event than anything else.

I can see people getting excited a month before a big event in what player is going to put in for tournament. Then when the players are in who is going to bid what and will a guy go for a deal or not. It could play out many different ways depending on the final structure but the end result is the same. Even if no deals are made it has people talking about the events and the players.

I also see a million little details that could turn it into a cluster but thats why I started this thread. I figured maybe everyone could shoot holes in it then at the end if they are mostly all plugged someone would say "Why not give it a shot?"

I could be wrong but I don't think there are 10 tournaments a year in the U. S. that have entry fees of over $200. I think this will work out real well if you just bid on the entry fees to start with until both members and players get the swing of it. A lot of members here can afford this and some of the top 5-20 players could have a bidding war on them and come out with some cool deals. Meanwhile the members can have some fun bidding against each other as long as they keep in mind that a profit is a longshot here. Shoot break even here. Johnnyt

Also, if we are just paying entry fee wee can't expect to be getting a piece of 100% of what the player wins. The more I think about this the more I think it would only work on regional tours and for players that live real close to a major event. Johnnyt
