I have a good friend on my pool team that's only been playing about 6 but he has improved rapidly, faster than anyone I've known before and became a SL6 in no time. He's been borrowing cues from me and other people on the team, but is looking to get something of his own. He doesn't have much to spend and he's been asking me for advice on what to get, but there's a problem. He likes everything. He plays well with hard tips, soft tips, medium tips, stiff cues, whippy cues, LD shafts, regular shafts, all weights, etc. I've been trying to pay close attention to how he plays with certain equipment but we're both at a loss. He'll have a great night with one stick, terrible with another, then turn around and do the exact opposite. Is there a particular route you would take if you were in this situation?

Yep,go have him find a cue that fits HIS wants in looks and in his price range, no matter what he'll like it.Start with a joss or mcD, those are standard starters. He'll develop a taste in cues eventually. Joss are the most consistent cues I've found. Schon are very consistent as well.
This, just have him find something that fits his eye....even better if he can hit a few balls with it before he buys it....having a cue that looks good and suits your eye is worth a ball or two in any match...
Tell him to get the least expensive cue of the ones he's liked so far.
You might suggest that he drive up to the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge, PA March 17th-21st and try out all the cues that will be on display there and they will let him hit with them. That way he has a huge selection to choose from and can judge how he likes the hit of each one.
That's a great idea! The key"hit a ball with the cue" feel matters way more than looks.
