What is a Shortstop?

I always labeled a shortstop the guy (or girl so I am PC) that did not really go on the road, was not a touring world beater....but made a incoming road players trip a "short stop".
 
I had a little discussion with a pro right here on AZB many years ago. I said that while a shortstop could lose, he could also beat anyone on a given night on his home turf.

The pro had to admit I was right. He has never forgiven me!(grin)

I really think Shortstop is more of a gambling term, it doesn't really fit tourney play. You can't win playing a shortstop. FIrst, they can win taking a chunk or all of your stake. Second, you win, you have to show way too much speed and your action is dead in the area. I found out that second thing the hard way.

I was once the shortstop in a small town. There were a dozen or two players that visited regularly but after a stranger played me they could pack their bags, they were done in that town.
