What is it with people...

My father used to tell me that the reason that people wear beards is to hide behind them. :D :D :D :p

That's the same reason people wear clothes.

I'm hiding my ugly face and a scar from fight where I was hit by a broken pool cue.

You must be one of SILVER_WOMBAT's high school classmates.

These girls are a couple of the Deal or No Deal models.
The Brunette is case #5 and the Blonde is #23.
I do not know these girls, nor do I claim be friends with them.
But they are nice to look at.:D :D

Well everyone is allowed an opinion. It's just not really cool to accuse people of cowardice and imply that they they are hiding because they choose not to reveal their identity on the net.

The deal is this, on any given topic there are comments, you either agree with them or you don't. If any of those comments affect you in the physical world where you need to act on them then that's the only time you should really care whether the person behind the comments has any "validity" or not. I.e. If someone comes on the forum and begins to trash your business anonymously. That would obviously be a case where someone is hiding behind anonymity to attempt to harm you. How you personally deal with that is up to you. Some people say, no problem, bring it on, but I guarantee you that if someone were to get really nasty it wouldn't be so easy to ignore. Now, this is where community comes in. If you hve a good rep with the community then the community will defend you and the troublemaker will usually be dealt with. But this is only because you have earned the respect of the community not for who you are in real life nor for what you do, but for who are online to your group.

No one has a face here. I don't even know what your "avatars" look like because I don't load them to save bandwidth, nor do I care. Your face is your personality. If it's ugly then that's how people will think of you, if it's respectful then that's how you are viewed.

Like I said before, no one cares about being taken seriously unless they are in some kind of transaction with another person. Otherwise it's all ego and center of attention preening. If someone needs to be serious then they will choose to reveal their identity in order to get the validation they need to transact as they wish.

I was in the Air Force. You could have opted out of whatever your MOS was if you weren't cool with it. I was assigned to become a cop. I didn't want to become a cop and so I didn't. Many of friends over the years also elected to retrain in other fields. I can understand your attitude as relates to your experience. I think it's a little harsh to project deception onto people who choose to remain anonymous in internet forums. As long as the anonymous person is not doing anything that harms another person then there is no deceit in not stating who you are and where you are.

If someone's intention is to network here then they will rightly choose to disclose who they are. Some people come here just for entertainment, they don't care to do business with anyone else on the board. They just want to goof off and make funny comments here and there without disclosing who they are. And that's fine too. Again it's pretty harsh to accuse everyone who chooses privacy of deception.

How to make friends, learn about new things, and do business while anonymous? Try reading about Second Life. There are people in that world who do all these things without ever disclosing to anyone who they are in real life. They have deep friendships, they build cool stuff and learn new things together, and they do business in a fantasy currency that has real world value. How do I know this? My ex-wife was a part of that world, almost fully immersed. I dipped in now and then. Those folks take that life and each other very seriously.

I don't know what your experience level is in INTERNET forums. I have been on them since 1996. You have probably never had the pleasure of being cyberstalked by an unrelenting troll. I hope you never do. One of those experiences is enough to regret sharing your real name with the world on the internet. Most boards these days are moderated so trolls are less of a problem but there are still plenty of reasons to protect your privacy. And, also, for a lot of the reasons you state, plenty of reasons to use your real name.

So goes the famous cartoon, "on the internet nobody knows you are a dog." They only see if you act like one.

Thanks John, like I said before I do agree with some of your opinions and know one said we have to agree on everything.

Internet Trolls who cyberstalk can really be a lot of fun also. They suspect that they are safe in their little digital world, however in this day and age anyone can be found if some one is willing to take the time to find them. You are right I have never had to deal with type of problem, however, I look forward to the challenge. I also guaranty that the Troll will wish he had stayed under his bridge, because I will find them!!!!! I will also solve any problems that we have with one another!!!!

John, I have always loved a challenge, and one thing I learned in the Military no challenge can not be over come, if the person who is challenged is dedicated to the accomplishment of the task at hand.

One thing is for certain we both love pool or we would not be here in the first place, and on this we can always agree!!!!!:)

Thanks again John, have a very nice day!!!

Craig...John is a VERY well known person, both here on AzB, and on other pool forums, and in the billiard industry at large, and has been for many years. He's been involved in the pool biz for more years than most of us have been playing, and has never shied away from anyone, anywhere. I've known him personally, as a friend, for more than 20 years (can you believe it's been that long John? LOL). He's very upfront about his opinions (which are nearly always backed up with facts to support his posts), and most of the time they are right on target...like in this thread. Anyone who really wants to know, like was posted by someone else, can merely reread old posts and threads, and know exactly who someone is, and where they are from, as well as where they 'hang out'. Just thought I'd add my thoughts...and btw, he really IS John Barton! :D

Thanks Scott, I also think that John is a good guy, I really appreciate people who stand-up for what they believe in. His posts are very professional and straight forward, and I am certain I would like him if we every met in person!!!

Have a nice day!!!

I find this amusing. People complaining about others hiding their identity or location.

"I find it very hard to take a person at face value when they have no face. To take this a single step further, I really can not take some one seriously who openly chooses to hide their identity, this forum..........."

All this coming from a few people who have Agent Smith from The Matrix and a picture of a dog as avatars.

If you look at my original post I used this:  and this: :D

It is just something to laugh about. Poke a little fun. Of course I didn't add anything to my second post and that's my bad. I mean who really does give a flying uck if the location is on there?

As for my avatar I wanted one that has movement in it. Now I'm so used to it I figure why change it, it's the only avatar I've had period. If you look through my posts I have posted plenty of pictures of myself in a pool setting. I also have stated before that my user name is my given middle name.

It's just nice to find a geographical location to go with the words of the poster. Just from this thread we have learned some new posters don't know or remember seeing a location to fill out.

Peace Out,
Scott

Scott,

I like your avatar. I will defend your right to have any avatar you want.

I agree with you and I posted my location because I'm proud of where I live.

I just can't take someone seriously looking at some of the avatars and sig lines until I spend the time to read a number of their posts. It's just a first impression thing.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. Just found this thread amusing.

Trolls can be fun to a point. The truth is though that if someone wanted to remain completely anonymous there are many ways to do this where no one could find them. There are people who surf the internet through proxies and filters that disguise and encrypt their path. But like I said before, this is less of a problem on moderated boards and also less of a problem in general now anyway.

I think the whole art of trolling has gone out of fashion. It has been replaced by relentless spamming.

Anyway - John Barton signing off. China.
