A metaphor on life itself. As well as a game (= a pastime), and a sport…

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Pool is a delightful pursuit that has challenged me, fascinated me, and has exposed me to countless wonderful people who've combined to bring me a lot of joy and good times. It is also the game I played so often with my late father and every time I play it, I think of him and smile.

Pool is the great Equalizer! Tall, short, fat, skinny, male or female matters not .. rack ‘em! Pool halls are like banks where you can go to any big city or small town and make a withdrawal, no account necessary.
Worked with a girl years ago and she’d walk into a place and the guys would laugh until she humbled most all of them.
It’s a beautiful symphony performed by the world’s greatest artists as well as the oboe player in the middle school band

1. A game
2. A sport
3. A skill
4. A science
5. An art
6. A social event on ____day(s)
7. A study

Those are the ones that came off the top of my head, I could probably have 10 or 20 more if I really thought about it; and there are 1,000 reasons for each one of those categories as to why people play it, but this question is a little too broad for me to really answer. I assume the real question is “what is pool TO YOU”. I guess I could sum it up by saying “a subculture I joined a long time ago”.
An exercise in futility.😂

THAT

I would add that pool is one of the few games (snooker as well) were, at times. you have no control at all whether you are going to win or lose. You are a bystander to the skill of the person you are playing and there you nothing you can do to stop them breaking, running a table and taking the win.

I don't think there are many sports where you can lose by not even having a chance to win.

Simply put…

Pool, in its essence, is not merely the gathering of spheres upon a slate plane, nor the act of their directed motion by means of an extended implement. It is, rather, the unfolding of Being within the interplay of trajectory and intent, where the human essence as the one who aims and strikes is revealed. The cue, as an extension of Dasein’s will, discloses the potentiality-for-action, while the balls, as beings unto themselves, are both resistance and possibility. In the convergence of lines, angles, and velocities, there resides a clearing, a space where the hidden truths of precision and error unconceal themselves. Pool is thus not a game, but a way in which Being comes into play.

Oh contraire, my friend. That only applies to tournament venues and perhaps certain league play. There are many ways to shark your opponent without saying a word and when not in the rigid confines of a tournament venue, you can vocalize as much as you can get away with.
Just saying...🤑

Pool was a game BOYS, lined up for the opportunity or turn to play at the Boy Club of America in Miami, Florida, in the early 1950's. It was something we did for fun. The Tables were CRAP, they Wobbled, when a Ball Dropped in a Pocket it made the sound of a Rock falling a great distance, on to a Large Rock falling great distance, hitting a Hard Wood Floor. Cue were not straight by any means, most would call them Junk House Cue. Were did have fun, and at the time that was all that was important.
