Those are the ones that came off the top of my head, I could probably have 10 or 20 more if I really thought about it; and there are 1,000 reasons for each one of those categories as to why people play it, but this question is a little too broad for me to really answer. I assume the real question is “what is pool TO YOU”. I guess I could sum it up by saying “a subculture I joined a long time ago”.

Isn't it both a prevention and a cause of suicide? More than one player has dropped stone cold dead during the middle of a game.
