i seem to be getting different explanations
or at least i am confused
is a stun shot dead centerball that skids does not roll
when it starts rolling it is no longer skidding and the stun is not in effect any longer
how could a right or left english not spin?
as u can see I don't understand yet
As I said before, a stun shot is when there is no VERTICAL roll to the CB at impact - it is not spinning backwards as in draw or rolling forward as with follow. It is skidding along the cloth with no roll. You are correct that once the cue ball is rolling the stun is no longer in effect.
You can have a stun shot with left or right english on it, just no vertical roll at impact.
A stun shot is not necessarily hit with center ball. When you use center ball the CB will skid only at first before it starts rolling and the distance it skids depends on how hard you hit it. The question is whether it is still skidding when it contacts the OB. On long shots, because it is difficult to hit it hard enough with center ball so the CB is still skidding at contact, it is usually accomplished by hitting the CB below center. Instead of skid then roll - it is backspin, then skid, then roll. This helps the CB cover some of that distance with backspin before it even begins to skid.
Deanoc, here is one of Dr. Dave's videos showing a straight in stun shot - or stop shot. This clip illustrates hitting the shot with draw that is scrubbed off on its way to the OB so the CB is skidding at impact. A stop shot is nothing more than a straight in stun shot. A picture is worth a thousand words.
