Do you like to race to 5 games, or 7 games, or 9 games or more? For the cheese? Some people race to 3 games! Some people race to 21 games, like Johnny Archer! But this thread is about short races for the cheese!

i lose at all races :) but if your smart, you should no exactly what length your most strongest at before a really good player can put some distance on you.

The shorter the race the better chance for the weaker player to come out a winner. Think of it this way: if you go to a casino you are more likely to come out a winner after one short session than if you played all day long for a year. You virtually have zero chance in the second scenario. Longer races always favor the better player.

I think the most common short race is to 5.

I was betting with Scooter against another local player in Michigan and we were betting 1,000 in a race to three. He said how about we change it to a race to four, I said lets double it and make it a race to two! He said Bet! Man that guy has some gamble!

Hi there Gary,

Do you remember back in the old days running into me on the road. We never taked much but I can guarantee I watched every move players like yourself made back then.

No internet back then. You just had to travel 200 miles and you had more action.

that was great. good to see your still around. geno.......

The shorter the race the quicker you could get all the cash.

If i knew I was the favorite I always liked shorter.

Even when practicing and making smaller bets I liked the short races. You have more chances to be on the hill like in a tourny. The only time you can practice being on the hill is when your there.

Good for your tournament game or gambling game.

I like this response.
When pool was an action game, 'by the game' was understood when a
price was mentioned.
A player asked me to play for a hundred about 10 years ago..I agreed.
When we got to the table, he asked me how long a set..I said 'SET?!?"
...he almost fainted...had never gambled by the game before.

Although I DID see you play by the set, Mr Nolan....
...1978, you played 'Floyd' 2-ahead for $500 at Farhat's place in Lansing.
....you won...

I've always been a fan of either ahead sets or by the game... Races (short races in particular) are more about the rolls and in a long ahead set you can normally fade the rolls better than a short race.

cheap, by the game
anything else 3,4,5 ahead
race to 5,7,11 or whatever can be decided by just one game

BushWacker has it right. By the game or ahead was the way we played back when. Problem is, now, very few players will play ahead.... and by the game, they will pull up quick ( winner or loser ) ! The Phillapinos that came here to VA ( Andam, Linning, etc ) played races to 13,15, 21. The rolls will tend to even out in long races ....most of the time...lol.
Gamblin is tough now. Many players will play 2-4 races and quit...they say their tired!....I'm just gettin warmed up!...lol.
Where is online poker when you need it?....lol
