What is the best, or fair short race to in games for money?

race to three

A slight change of subject...Some of you will remember Gary Pinkowski...He told me a story of two guys in his home pool room in Binghampton,N.Y. A bookie and a gin player ( neither of whom could play a lick, but they played equally bad.) They would bet pretty high and play straight pool to THREE POINTS! I thought that sounded like an exciting game...

races

When I came up races of 7,9 and 11 were the most common, with 5's pullin up the rear usually for lower sums of cash. My persoanl favorite back then was 7. Of course it didn't really matter much as I would literally play all night long, often times into the following day. That was not uncommon for me at that time. Now after a very long layoff (9 years this time) & with the onset of age I have medical issues to contend with I did not have before. As I have stated to those whom I am working with when I get to the point of playing again I will set parameters to play within. I have braces on my knees, inserts in my shoes, a bad back, trigger lock on one hand and carple tunnel on the other. Not to mention I am just older and do not have the sort of stamina I once possessed. So therefore I will set an odd number of sets to play 1,3, or 5. I do not believe at this point in breaking even, someone should win something. What we play and how many games per set will be mutually accepted. But once we have reached the agreed upon number of sets, I'm done. I either go home winner or I go home loser, and set my sights on another day. It all sounds good on paper but once I start playing for the cash we will see if I have the discipline to stick to it.

I know this is about short races, but I really enjoy playing to 21 wins.

I am pretty young (23), and whenever I am going to play with someone older (40+) I try to talk the race into as long as possible, because most of times I will have an advantage when it comes to stamina.

Oh, I have a race to 100 going on at the moment with my training buddy, for a crate of beer :D

As you can tell by my post I am well aware of youths stamina advantage and have incorporated parameters to account for it. As I have stated in other threads the outcome of a match can often be determined in the preceeding negotiation. Arriving at a fair competitive match can be elusive and often not the objective of one or both parties. The negotiation process can be quite entertaining to observe. We used to call that "Pool hall Gaff". Each party jousting for position. Some became notorious for their ability to attain the advantage, Ronnie Wiseman is a notable example. Well that's my 2 cents!

One evening I was a little jaegermeistered up and was approached by a guy I was warned about before his arrival... On the natch I might have tried him but I knew I had no shot so I asked him what he wanted to gamble for after he had badgered me for about the umpteenth time.... He said we could do $100...

I pulled out a quarter and said call it in the air and he could win or lose his $100.... Best race when you have no shot sometimes is just stick with the coin flip

The evening got way more entertaining and I ended up leaving with about $375 of his cash and he never had a shot at getting even or winning..It was all prop bets and woofing at the wrong times on his part..... Had I played him even in a short race to 3 I wouldn't have liked my chances as inebriated as I was LOL

Hey Renfro,
Good post.

Times have changed...

Do you like to race to 5 games, or 7 games, or 9 games or more? For the cheese? Some people race to 3 games! Some people race to 21 games, like Johnny Archer! But this thread is about short races for the cheese!

Years ago I liked to play by the game, $5 or $10 was pretty common. Guys would play this way until closing time unless one or the other was really getting steam rolled. Usually somebody would win $100 or so.

Nowadays, if you play by the game and get the guy stuck 5 games or so, he/she thinks about quitting. So.....this is a lil tidbit to get them to lose a weee bit more. ...If they want to play $5 a game, ask them if they would want to play a race to 10 for $50? It works out the same right?
It actually doesn't work the same, but you would be getting them to put up $50 instead of $5.
If they say "I only have $20"....well...they really didn't want to bet anyway IMHO.

There are many different types of scenarios. Play with what you are comfortable with.

On a side note: I rarely play for money any more. I just get together to hit balls with some of my friends/teammates. We enjoy a few beers and have fun.

Hey 9ball,
You hit the nail on the head when you said having a little fun. Man even if you are playing for big bucks you are supposed to have fun. If not you are not really enjoying what you are doing. Your post is good! Thanks.

I've always been a fan of either ahead sets or by the game... Races (short races in particular) are more about the rolls and in a long ahead set you can normally fade the rolls better than a short race.

Good input Tuda,
Lots of good input going on in this thread. Thanks.

by the rack Set a time limit

By the game pressure builds up....

By the rack, Set a time limit. If you are matched with someone on your level it should be close.
If you are tied maybe have the last person who won pay the time.
Be creative as long as both of you agree.
If your the better player & your looking to ROB them make it as long as possible.

I agree with Neil race to five is to short might as well play by the game. I myself am a longer format player I'll sit there and play the ghost races to 30 even. I just love playing the longer format.

I had have farts last longer that races to five !!!!!!!!

Per the game...

I prefer to play per game. If we play per game we have an exact result of who was better on that day.

I also prefer the rule me and my pool buddies used to use for both poker and pool...ain't no one going home until the losers say we're going home. As an older player now, I might not be able to keep up but have always felt the loser should be the one who decides when the match is over....as long as he can pay off...

Another good thread Lock...thank you! :clapping:

In any good action room, losers say when it's all over is understood....

..the one exception is when the winner wants to raise the bet....
..if the one losing doesn't call the raise, the winner can quit honorably.
"Jack it or crack it"

I guess I haven't been around good action in the last few years. In fact I know I haven't. One, I generally don't go looking for action. And two, most all the pool action in Oklahoma moved to the poker rooms as far as I can tell. I am referring to mere mortals...not the gambling elite like Chip and Joey! ;)

As much as I agree with the above and generally have honored this code in the past, there have been situations where work became more important. I would sometimes give a time limit or a set limit in certain situations. If the game began late, I would almost always let it be known early. If it was a weekend and no work...game on.
