I was just wondering what everyone thinks is the best tip to put on a break cue? I have 2 breakers that I want to re-tip.

The reason I want everyones opinion is that I own a room and alot of my customers are asking what is out there and I figured this was going to be the best place to get some info.

Thanks in advance for your Help

Todd

My customers really like the phenolic. I like the Talisman Break tips.
Both available from Atlas Billiard Supply.

excellent tips, hold chalk well

Regarding the Picone White Diamonds, these are quotes from his website:

"* The White Diamond tip is not a phenolic tip. Phenolic resins are hard and brittle and although they do make the ball jump as well as break hard, can be difficult to glue and very prone to miscues. "

And then states:
"Made from special selected multi-layered fiber and resins, they are precision turned..."

Umm...multi layered fiber and resin...isn't that a form of phenolic?

I'm not trying to attack Joseph Picone's integrity and I don't mean to be a devils advocate here. I may be misinformed about the makeup of phenolic materials, but it sure feels like I'm getting smoke blown up my a$$.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong?

Phenolic is member of the thermoset resin family -- it was originally the old Bakelite. That family also includes materials like polyester, melamine, and others -- any of which may be used in a fiber-reinforced application. Maybe Joseph has his own non-"phenolic" and fiber formulation.

A double pressed buffalo tip is best for breaking in my opinion. Phenolic jumps better.

You need one of my canvas resin tips...much more durable & hold chalk lots better than phenolic. You can get them in 1pc tip/ferrule combo...or I'll thread them into an unbreakable ferrule...either way you get a lifetime warranty.;)
Here is a pic of the canvas threaded into a ferrule.

phenolic defined

TALISMAN BREAK TIP ALL THE WAY!!! The new Talisman break tip is BY FAR the best LEATHER break tip on the market.

***Phenolic tips definitely have their place. They transfer more force directly to the cueball, but they lack in grip and control IMHO.

FYI.....

When you say "phenolic" you are really refering to a whole group of plastics that contain the chemical PHENOL. This group of plastics includes epoxy resins and melamine based materials as well as many others.

The material that Picone is selling IS a phenolic by definition as it contains an epoxy resin base to bond the fibers together.

The canvas that Varney uses is also a phenolic material.
