What is the correct decision?

A few months back I went to a 9 ball tournament to watch a buddy who was entered. My buddy is a 58 year old local player who was a 7 in APA when he played league but now only plays occasionally. This tournament draws a lot of players many of whom are known touring pros and a lot of strong shortstops. An interesting situation came up during one game that I have never seen happen before and the ruling seems to me it was the wrong one and without mentioning any names I would like to get your feedback. Situation:The race was hill/hill and my buddy was shooting and his opponent was a touring pro. The previous game the 9 ball was made early so the remaining balls were being used and in this instance the 13 ball was the money ball. While shooting at the 8 ball my buddy missed it and made the 13 ball but forgot it was the winning ball and kept shooting. We spectators noticed and there was some murmering from the crowd but no one said anything and although the pro looked at everyone he didn't say anything either. My buddy continued shooting making the 9 ball but missing the 10. His opponent, the pro, then ran the rest of the balls and shook my buddys hand and that is when someone in the crowd said my buddy should be declared the winner. The pro said since he kept shooting after making the 13 but then missed the 10 ball the 12 ball became the money ball which he made. The tournament director was called and he ruled in favor of the pro. That was the wrong decision IMO because what if the 9 ball is lucked in but the player shoots the next ball without noticing. Would the same ruling apply? Obviously they should not have been using balls other than 1 thru 9 but this is a commonplace occurence. What do you think?

Doug...That's B.S.! Your buddy won the game. Who was the "cheating" pro?

a touring pro hustling a barbox 9 ball tourney???

I guess touring pro needs a little definition as there is no TOUR......

sorry..

There's a saying, "snooze you looze". Your Buddy fell asleep. He won anyway because the game is over...SPF=randyg

Randy is right of course

Once your buddy dropped the money ball that game was over. Nothing that happened after that mattered. I hate TD's that don't know their business or worse, deliberately cheat.

This is a very rare and unfortunate occurence. If I would of been the TD in this situation, I would of had the players play the game over. Just my opinion.
Also, If I would of been the pro in this situation, I would of told the player of making the money ball. I wouldnt of felt right about the win, but thats just me.

Rule 5.15: END OF GAME
On the opening break, the game is considered to have commenced once the cue ball has been struck by the cue tip. The 1-ball must be legally contacted on the break shot. The game ends at the end of a legal shot which pockets the 9-ball, or when a player forfeits the game as the result of a foul.

'nuff said, your friend wins and the "so-called" TP should be made known!

I agree with Neil. This is one of many reasons I've never liked playing on bar tables, I've seen some weird stuff happen but nothing like this. The tables should be open, then the balls could just be reracked like they are supposed to be.

Well Neil, you probably have the right thinking behind this. Ok, I change my vote.:D Your buddy won.

Your friend loses the game due to unsportsmanlike behavior of showboating by pocketing extra balls after winning the game.

Just kidding! The pro and TD gets penalized with being a jerk and clueless, respectively. :(

Is this the TP by chance?

Re:Decision

Naming the pro or TD would not benefit anything or anyone at this point and since this particular room holds arguably the best tournaments in the southeast negative publicity wouldn't help them or pool. Your comments have already made a positive contribution to pool and how a TD should run tournaments. The pro and the TD read this forum I know so hopefully both will be embarassed enough to make better decisions in the future. IMO the TD was intimidated by the pro and since the local had virtually no chance of winning the the tournament and sacrificing the local would ruffle the least feathers. Thanks for all your feedback. I will post them "anonymously" on the bulletin board in the room, lol.
