What is the greatest single achievement in sports?

Definitely my cycling hero (I used to race as a teenager and then for UCLA).

Lemond could have easily won five TDF's, but for the ridiculous stuff that happened with Hinault in '85 and the hunting accident.

Best ever in my opinion although his career wa shorter than other greats. He was close to death after getting shot and had severe complications during recovery.. he still has shotgun pellets in his liver and lungs.

Football is a game....but the Patriots made sporting history whilst playing it....

Chess is a game....Hawking can win a game of chess....
...pool requires hand/eye coordination and good reflexes...hence it's a sport.

But semantics can be confusing...

A Canuck was out hunting.....a naked woman jumped out from behind a tree...
...sez...."I'm game for anything."
...so he shot her.....

Not much of a sport, was he?

Pt, there are a couple of things here that are glaringly obvious.
One: Hawking has no hand/eye coordination.
And two: Naked women don't jump out from behind trees where Canucks live 'cause it's too damn cold.
So there.

Bobby Fischer winning the world chess championships in 1972. The way that he qualified to play Boris Spassky by murdering Mark Taimanov 6-0, Bent Larsen 6-0 and Tigran Petrosian 6 1/2 - 2 1/2 is just completely unheard of. And he beat a system that was completely dominated by the Soviets.

Other notable mentions;

Leicester City winning the Premier League (football)
Kirk Shepherd reaching the 2008 PDC World Championship final against all the odds

Jahangir Khan winning the 1982 International Squash Players Association (ISPA) Championship without losing a single point !

nice.. a fellow squash player on here? :)

I play A level squash and was a club pro for a bit

I was going to suggest Racquetball's Kane Waselenchuk's 137 match winning streak. wow

I played F level 30 years ago ... gained a great appreciation for the game by playing folks who were a bit better than myself :embarrassed2: Squash certainly teaches humility.

Not close to the Grand Slam Bobby Jones owns.
Really? Bobby Jones' record is awesome but 2 of the events were amateurs. Tiger possessed all 4 professional majors at same time. Granted, not all were won in a calendar year but he had to beat way better players than Jones did. To say its "not close" is kinda crazy. Another TW feat that is pretty stupid: winning SIX straight U.S.G.A. amateur events(3 junior, 3 regular), all at match play. Jones is an icon for sure but give TW his well earned props.

What Tiger did was spectacular, but still won't match up with Jones,
Jones was an amateur playing Professionals. And he retired as an amateur.
Better players today? Not when you level the field. The courses were shorter then, yes, but so was the ball flight. Hickory shafted clubs were inaccurate, and greens were way fuzzier then than the 12 Stimp carpets we have today.
And, don't forget they had the stymie rule.
Also, I'll bet you don't know what Jone's middle name is without looking it up.

Tyre. Read more than a few books about RTJ.

Auto racing is 10% driver / 90% car+team.

Not even close!!!!!
There have been several cases where drivers have swapped teams. A funny thing always happens, instead of the faster team making the slow driver win, the faster driver gets the slow team winning races. Explain that one.
By your reasoning Danica Patrick can hop in Tony Stewarts car and start winning races.

Well said. A LOT of drivers are fast but being fast and having good race-craft is another deal altogether. Granted, a good driver can't take a p.o.s. to the front but if cars are fairly close the better driver wins. Used to go to SCCA races and was always amazed at how guys in slower cars won more than their share.

As far as greatest moments in sports viewing, this Super Bowl was right up there with Jack Nickalus winning the Master's at age 46 and the USA Hockey team Miracle on Ice.

These are three moments where time itself seemed frozen to me.
