This is a trick question, and if you do not get it right I'm my mind, by 1/1/2021, I will share my thought to see if you agree.

I'm with this guy and will not argue with the op unless he builds cues.

Does the op build anything?

Actually that is a funny, but so far no correct answer.

Something most business need to be in business, unless it a hobby business.

Then it just a hobby not real deal business.

The answers you missed? I will assume you don't build cues and that you don't build anything at all.

The most important is the person inside.

Maybe you believe it's the gubment? Doubtful but funny.

Often times they are not allowed inside the shop. All businesses need them but not in their shop.
I didn’t take “in the shop” to mean actually “in” the shop. 😁

I‘m a woodworker, not a cue maker. Nor do I operate as a business. But regardless, there are too many “equally important” things actually inside my shop to identify a “most important”. Too many things without which I simply could not do what I do.

Customers.
Correct, as you can have best wood, best skills, best of everything to build a product, or provide service but without customers, and customer service you have nothing.

Customers are not easy to get, very easy too loose with poor product, poor warranty, no customer sevice, or poor communication.

Dave got it right, many in business fail for the simple reason they do not get the fact the customers, is most important person, or thing in business.

This question was asked to young guy who own small retail B & M business, he reply was "me", yes he is until he runs out of personal money to open doors, that day is coming soon. Do not think he will see 2nd anniversary.

Great Job Dave in FL.

I think you trying to say Govenment above, as I do not do Mellinal abreavations. Govenment is you partner, as soon as you open they want fees for all sort of thing, when you start Y making money they want their cut of profits.

Started small business back 30 plus years ago. Open on day one with about small investment of my saving to start trying to make money, second year was good profit. That year I had two silent partner taking part of profits. STATE & Federal Tax Collectors, plus about 17% to Social Security. Know something about business, as it lasted almost 30 years.

Technology replaced print media.

Your question very clearly asked about "in the shop." In many businesses, they are not allowed in the shop due to insurance companies and their policies.

If I choose to spell GOVERNMENT the correct way, trust me, I know how.

If the future, if you want to correct a persons humor, please spell correctly while doing so.

When government gets screwed up, I call it a gubment, simple humor.

Sort of expected from reading previous posts by the PO that his answer would either be wrong, or trivial.

Anyone who has paid attention to the subject knows that statistically most small businesses where the owner does not have a strong business background but decides to commercialize something they were good at and liked to do fail because of too many customers. This is fact.

The owner loves what they are doing, can’t believe their success and is afraId to say no. They quickly get stuck on a treadmill, overextend buying materials and equipment based on projected demand, perhaps hiring, perhaps borrowing. All the money and time go into the “business” with little income to owner. Soon they are behind everywhere and can’t deliver. They take more orders to get ready cash, knowing they won’t really be able to accomplish without stiffing people whose money they already took. Soon they kick the cat, the dog cringes when they go by, the kids stay away, and the wife threatens divorce.

Anyone competent can get customers at a given price/delivery/quality point.
The important thing is managing that matrix and the customers for profit.

The most important thing in any business is management.

Well haveing a small one man business, the produced what some might call a product, and also did servie work, I understood that the customer, client, or person pay for my product, or service was most important thing in my business.

They made my mortgage payment, insurance, car payment, bought tire, etc., etc., etc. They got special treatment, because of their status in my little world.

How many time do you go some place to spend your money where you do not get a hello, or thank you for your visit. Customer Service is more then two word on an answer machine. Followed by push this number.

Insurance reasons are just what we say to keep the ones we don't want out in the shop in the waiting room. In my 30 years in business in auto repair I have never had an insurance company tell me to keep customers out of the shop. Funny.
