He paid after every game with casino chips, I was playing on "ass," as we used to call it. I had a phony check book with phony checks just in case.

Maybe so

Better the money then you guys getting whacked up six ways!

He may have welched on $800K, but he wasn't shooting $40K air barrels either! I would say it was a fair compromise. ;)

You might be right, I'm not that upset about it, but lets not forget, he didnt know about any air barrels when he decided to stiff for the 800k. That was his own larceny at work.

Beard,

I would like to know what your "exit" strategy was if you lost. If I remember right, you said you had checks printed up. Did you intend on writing one? I think just being in possession of them is some serious time. Where you guy packin'? Shoulda' been!

I would like to know and I'm sure some others would too.

Thanks.

He could have used the good old, 'oh you were serious about gambling? I thought you were kidding. I thought we were playing for fun.' I am sure Archie would have understood.:)

It was a con score, Jason

A con score. Something scripted and controlled. Archie was alone, out of town, playing in "my" joint, surrounded by my people (even tho he didnt know that), and he thought he was playing a billionaire. He would have never gotten a real check to hold. They were just for "flash." We didnt need weapons, it's all about the performance. Any good "lemon" man could do well on Broadway acting in the theaters.

Thanks for the reply Freddy. I may be a paranoid MF, but I always look several steps a head. I'm also am a fellow Chicagoan as well as work in advertising, so I know the power of perception is great. 6 to 1 gives a lot of security, but in today's age that is never enought. This might have been the greatest hustle of all time including Archies (even for a lot less money)! I miss the good ol' days!

I was in the Netherlands on business, and stopped into a small bar on a canal outside of Amsterdam where I spotted a nice 3-cushion table. I hadn't played the game much then, so I grabbed a beer and watched the two men playing with interest. One was a well-dressed man who appeared to be in his 50s who played with a dignified, steady pace, and the other was a guy in his 30s wearing a dirty tracksuit, who ran around the table as though he was over-caffeinated. On the counter next to the table they had a stack of 1-euro coins that they seemed to be betting on, passing them from one side to the other. They would pass one each time a game was won, and a few changed whenever someone completed a shot that seemed particularly difficult, involving many more cushions than usual. After about an hour of watching they stopped, spoke a bit in dutch, and the younger guy left. I started paying for my beer and was about to leave when he returned carrying an shabby duffle bag and set it on the table. His opponent opened the bag and started taking out wads of wrapped 100-euro bills, then put them back in along with the 1-euro coins on the counter. I stood at the bar dumbfounded, watched the younger guy leave, and the older guy take off a few minutes later along with the fairly attractive female bartender. I think I stood in the empty bar for about 10 minutes half expecting something else bizarre to happen before leaving. Whether the money was over the game or another course of business I can't be sure, but I like to think of it as the biggest 3-cushion game I ever saw....

I try to get a game at my place for $ 5.00 sets of 9 ball, play 10 sets, race to 7 nobody wants to..........I do it for the fun, hard times in michigan.:frown:

Here is a link to a 10 part series of interviews, Tom Sexton had with Archie. Very interesting read, I"m just starting the 2nd one about the pool. Sorry, but in case someone already has said this... who is Mr. X that he beat in pool that was also a champion poker player?
