What is the most you have ever been stiffed for

I Can't Be Stiffed!

Since I have been sixteen, I POST & PAY after every game. If it's a new guy in the poolroom, I lose the first game to set these standards.

$1500 when I was 16. Taught me all I needed to know about playing on the wire with strangers.

After that incident, the most I got stiffed on was the last game by strangers. Occasionally I got airbarrelled on a cheap set, but not for alot. If the set was played high enough, it didnt get played unless jellybeans were posted first.

I just remembered 1 time, and it was bad!

I was 20 and playing bars in my neighborhood. I beat a guy out of $50 and he gives me a check. I take it to my local grocery store to cash & it comes back no good. The next weekend I go looking for the guy in the bar. When I find him I had had a couple of beers. I get up in his face and cuss him out and demand payment. He calmly says don't worry I have your money. Back then I thought I was a tough guy and I asked him to step out back in the alley. He says, "OK" and we go out.
THIS GUY HITS & KICKS ME SOOOO MANY TIMES BEFORE I EVEN KNEW THE FIGHT STARTED, THAT NOW I'M OFF MY FEET AND ON MY HANDS & KNEES. As he is coming in to punt my head like a football, I (luckily) find a 2 X 4 that was under an old car keeping it from rolling. I grab it and swing it wildly catching his chin. I had broken his jaw.
We walk across the street to St. Luke's Hospital and he gets his jaw wired up and I had about 30 stitched in my head & shoulders.
It turns out that he was a Judo & Karate expert and teacher at a local health club.
When we were all done we shook hands and went back to the bar and had a couple of beers together. He was pissed that he would lose weight because of not being able to eat anything but liquids for the nest 6 weeks.
I wasn't pissed at all - but I never PICKED A FIGHT AFTER THAT!

Ps - This was 40 years ago. Nowadays, someone would have a gun OR someone would get hurt bad.

He's lucky you weren't playing in a BCA sanctioned event. I think shooting the opponent is instant disqualification from the tournament:eek:

you tried to quit ahead after playing only a few sets...and you call HIM a nit. that makes sense.

Well he is down 60, and i said look, i dont want to play anymore, and he makes this big fuss how i cant leave till he says so.
...
So this guy being a NIT as he is, gets a couple guys i know on his side and thier all saying i cant leave till he says so.

Hmmm... this makes me wonder... when is it okay to quit? I would think we can all agree that it's not okay to quit after just one game, unless that's agreed upon already. And after 1,000 games probably nobody would fault you for wanting to call it quits. :p But somewhere in between there's a gray area... I don't play for money so I don't have any experience with it, but I would probably feel okay if my opponent wanted to quit after 5 sets or so.

stiffed on the golf course...

Shannon Daulton, Mike Coltrain, and myself were stiffed out of $1450 dollars on the golf course in Asheville a few years back. It was at Asheville Country Club and the 3 of us were playing 2 other guys. One of which was Derek Leonard or "Chew tobacca" as is his nickname. He also plays very good pool. On the 16th hole which is a par 5 dogleg right, we teed off and hit our drives down the fairway. They then hit their tee shots down the 17th fairway which runs parallel to the 16th saying it was a short cut. We didn't think much about it and just chalked it up to a home course advantage. We went out to the fairway and hit our second shots and then drove to the green. When we got there those two were no where to be found. We looked and they were hauling ass up the cart path heading to the club house. We immediately went after them , but when we got to the parking lot they were already gone. They left the cart in the middle of the parking lot. We went to Dereks pool room in High Point, NC but his mom said he wasnt there. We never did see that money. If anyone ever gambles with Derek tell him that Tommy said he was a sorry son of a *****.

LOL I know. you would think that I had killed off that set of brain cells age ago, but no the memory of being stiffed persists.

I also remember after I had him stuck over a thousand, Tommy Brown and Nikki the barracuda were in Bird Bowl as well and Tommy walks up to me, leans in real close and tells me I'd do well to find out what size shoes he wears (my opponent was wearing fancy new sneakers) and whether he owns a TV. He knew I was about to get stiffed and was trying to communicate that to me. Me, in my infinite wisdom that a 16 year old possesses, ignored the advice and proceeded to add a few more hrs to the time bill, which as the big winner, I paid.

Well, you would be amazed

It is amazing to me that some people gamble for so much money on pool, and than get short changed when they win.

At the antics an 'airballer' will pull when they can not pay.

$700 is the most I got airballed for after winning $2,000 from a guy I
gave the 8 too. I made him leave his stick, and took him to Dillons to get
some more money, and he ran out another door there, and inbetween buildings
making his 'getaway'. Now, about 4 years later, he is getting back to Pool, calls to try to get into a tournament underhandicapped, and then when he finds out I am playing, noone hears from him again. He has done this several times. I kept his stick for quite awhile, then sold it for $250 to a friend.

$400 is the next most. Playing $200 sets giving up the 7 and break to a young kid with plenty of money. He a banger and tries to combo 9 in all the time, and real lucky sometimes, so we decided to play 1 last set for $400,
and I am giving him the wild 7,8 and break. Goes hill-to-hill, and I win.
I made him show the money before playing. He has it, and so do I. He ducks
around the corner, and runs out the front door. He laid his cue on the table,
so I wasn't real concerned. Turns out, he 'rented' the cue for $6, and their
is $26 in time, so I have to pay $32, and get screwed out of the $400. He
made his money selling dope, so I imagine he has met a worse fate than I
could have bestowed upon him.

I once got 1 of my best friends in High School down $3,000 playing double or nothing (it was funny to me), but he was sweating big time, figuring on selling
his car, his stero, etc.. I told him to forget it, that I don't take money from
friends, and hoped that he learned a lesson.

1 other time, I went to visit my brother in Law School in Topeka, and he had to work, so his best friend took me 'out on the town' to hustle some action.
I was a sophmore in High School. Well, nothing was going on, so we just started playing for $5 a game, and he was a pretty decent shot. Well, I won
quite a few, bumped up per game, etc., till I ended up having him $2,975 down. I was having the time of my life, but tried not to show it. We got done, and he said, "You aren't really going to make me pay that, are you?".
I said, in my most serious voice, "You lost it to me, didn't you". He starts stammering, joking, dancing as fast as he can, and finally I bust out laughing,
and told him no, I wasn't, especially with him being my brother's best friend.
But, it was fun teaching someone 'older' a lesson ... lol

One of the old classic Tournament Stiffs.

I THOUGHT - I was seeing one of the old classic Tournament Stiff's this past weekend at The Memphis Classic.
This used to happen in Johnston City and other major tournaments quite often, back in the '60's, 70's & '80's.
I was playing Mark Haddad in the tourney Saturday and I won 7 to 5. This fellow (who was drunk and bothersome to everyone Fri night) comes up and asked me where Mark was. I said - Hell, I don't know where he is, why?
He says he was betting $1,000 on me to win and he thinks Mark left the building by the back door. I, (or no one else) liked this guy at all. A Real Creep. I said - NO - I just saw him go into the women’s bathroom and maybe there is a window in there. This idiot goes into the women’s bathroom and causes even more trouble. He tells me there is no window. I said maybe he put a wig on and is leaving now. This nut starts running all over looking for Mark w/ a wig.
I sorry, (and I know it is wrong and cruel), but in my heart, I think this guy is a faggot & I hate that. I cold have led him around all night but I was trying to match up & did. As I am going out to get some fresh air I see Mark by the main entrance and tell him what this guy is saying and telling Jason & Mr. Samples. He goes up to the creep and confronts him. The creep had to eat his words and back off. Jason wanted to ring his neck for starting shit. There never was any bet at all. I'm sure if there would have been, I would have heard about it before now.
This scenario has happened many times in the past and the guy was telling the truth. I won't go into names - but when a guy was on the loser’s side and playing tough action - he might bet large with a local (making sure there was no post) and see what happens. If confronted while leaving right after the match - he might say he was going to get his money at the motel room and will be right back. Yea, Sure.

my worst beat was when i got stiffed for a job i did, t shirts,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the guys ordered a hundred shirts for a big weekend blowout,,,,,,,,,,,,well, that was also closing of the bar for them

i tryed to collect once,,,,,,,,,the manager told me to come in when i knocked at the office door. i wasnt who he was expecting and there was a pile of white powder on the desk.

went back after the weekend and the place was closed. a bit upset, i went to the state business liscense place. they told me who the owners were. i showed up at a real estate office looking for an owner and the secretary told me he wasnt there,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yeah right. With my very professional demeanor I explained the incident at the office . I aggreed not to let it go any further if I were paid.

Now Im expecting to go to the sherriffs office the next day and file agaimst this crook. I was awakened by the secretary who asked me to appear at the real estate office. When I walked in there was a check for the entire amount, Hurridly I went to his bank and cashed it. After all it had to be good and was. Didnt want to go to the cop shop and file paperwork.

Danny Petralba, 1996 or so: $1800

Paid me $160 which barely covered time that night, promised to pay me every time he sees me. I am not worried about it, I didn't lose any money, it was a good game and I enjoyed the session. Would I like to get paid? Sure, the money would be nice. Why haven't I done anything to get paid? Because I have told everyone that asks me about gambling not to play him, and I talk to a LOT of people. Him not paying me cost him a lot more than he thinks.

I guess you can live with it. For $1640, I'm pretty sure he can live with it.
