I'm not sure that I use the correct name of that thing  .

Anyways, can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the phenolic-patch between the tip and ferrule ?

I saw it in the BG shaft , is it for protecting the ferrule only or it also for the hit ?

Thanks,

Hello, as far as I know, any "patch" or "backer" between the tip and ferrule is put there usually to help keep the ferrule from getting damaged. It could also be used to get a softer hit from a hard tip.
Hope this helps,

It's been around for a long time.French tips were the state of the art
for most of the last century. The best, like Champion tips, used bakelite
on the bottom.
Bakelite protects the ferrule and the tip.For me it also has a satisfying
sound.I compare this sound to the sharp crack of a titleist golf ball as
opposed to the muffled sound of a spaulding dot..
I still use bakelite pads for Mooris and Snipers.

The influence of French tips has pervaded the game in North America.
I know how long my cue is in inches, how heavy by ounces but i've
always known how big the ferrule is by millimeters (the French use
only the metric system).

By the way,i'm falling in love with your avatar...but she's too young.
Does she have an aunt?

It also helps...

The pads are available as stand-alone items. They also help prolong the life of the ferrule by letting you true the end of the pad every time you replace a tip rather than turning down the end of the ferrule.

It's called a fiber pad, and is most often found on shafts that have either an ivory or micarta ferrule. Because these two ferrule materials are expensive 'upgrades', some makers would install them to not only protect the material from inadvertent damage, but also the lengthen their life over repeated tip changes. The beauty of the fiber pad is that it can actually be refaced by a skilled maker/repairman and reused a couple of times before replacing the pad itself.

And yes, as previously mentioned, a fiber pad will soften the 'hit' of a hard tip/ferrule combination.

As a side note, carbon fiber pads also keep some shafts from going "BOING" when you hit the cue ball.

I've never seen this. Can someone post a photo?

ones red the other is black...as was said above its a pretty old technique, the pads were used to protect the ferrules made of ivory.
