What is your definition..,

I don't see a pro pool player as anything but a skill level title, 750 Fargo and up is about the standard. Without an actual organization, there is no other way to gauge it. If the PBT was around still, then I would say a Pro is someone that was a member of the PBT and played in their events. The way some leagues and places do it when they say "if you made money in a tournament" or even simply "if you play for money" is stupid. I guess people can be making money as gamblers in pool with spots and putting up a lot of money when being less than great at the game, but I would call them professional gamblers rather than professional pool players.

Strictly speaking if your livelyhood is based on playing pool, then you are a professional pool player, Yes, even the crappy pool player can be a professional by carefully choosing his victims :)

If you are homeless when you break up with your girlfriend, you might be a professional pool player.

If you lay down in the seat when testing a used car, you might be a professional pool player.

When you keep a pillow in the back seat of your car so it sleeps more comfortably, you might be a professional pool player.

When you have known people for years and only know them by pool related nicknames, you might be a professional pool player.

When you haven't had a bank account in the last ten years, you might be a professional pool player.

When you know six different ways to cook Spam, you might be a professional pool player.

When you go through a basket or bag in the back seat of your car to find your cleanest dirty shirt, you might be a professional pool player.

When people that know you take one look at your broke ass walking their way and turn around, you might be a professional pool player.

When your pool cue is more important than your car or clothes, you might be a professional pool player.

When you have given your pool cue a name, you might be a professional pool player.

Just a start, with apologies to Jef Foxworthy!

there are certain personalities who matches up for big money. not very good players, but could still be good at making bets (they could in theory also hog the action table at derby playing against some bald real estate guy with a lot of money). would that be a pro pool player?

I've seen a certain person in Vegas win $240,000 in a one pocket match before 9am. Is he a pro?

I sure as hell don't want to be a pro with a 750 fargo rate, hell i don't want to be the pro with a 800 fargo rate if there's 60+ players with higher ratings. If there were 10,000 people entering the tournament then maybe

What about a (theoretical) player who only competes in “pro” events but never wins money?

Your theoretical player could still be considered a pro. A pro with a need for a real job.

Entering a tournament as a professional for example should make you a professional. Doesn't have anything to do with success or lack thereof.

Without a governing body defining amateur / pro status in pool there will always be a huge gray area when it comes to a true definition or either.

Not a pro in both examples.
