What Is Your Favorite Music For Playing Pool?

BillYards

I have been away from competitive pool for a few years now, but after recently joining this forum, my blood is pumping to get back into the mix. Some of the posts have made me quite nostalgic and I was trying to recall some great times I have had playing billiards.

Some of my best experiences were when I was practicing with a good shooter that was as determined to win as I was and we pushed each other to shoot beyond ourselves. But, I also recall that music always played a big part in the whole experience for me.

Sometimes I liked the power of bands like AC/DC or the driving rhythms of Santana or the epic relaxation tunes from Pink Floyd or the refined smoothness of Coltrane. I just know that music can really add (or detract from the experience).

Let us know what music drives you on the table. Give us your Credence or your Eagles. Throw out your thrash bands. How about modern stuff, like Coldplay or Dave Mathews? How about the soundtrack to The Color of Money?

Also throw in some game-killers. Maybe Country music slows your game up too much. Maybe Barry Manilow sings you into a gentle coma.

And be specific... we want song titles and group names!

I will add mine after I have thought about it more.

I like to play to upbeat fast playing songs (rock or even a fast country song). It helps me stay focused and get into a rhythm. I hate playing with tejano music blaring. It doens't really bother me at first but after about the 15 straight song I lose it.

I was going to start a similar post to see what songs people have heard that are about or at least talk about playing pool. My favorite is "Rack em' Up" by Johnny Lang.

favs

Rob Zombie
The league players hate it when my Thursday nite team loads the juke box $$ and plays all head banging music

How about George Thorogood and 'Bad to the Bone'? Or Nazareth's 'Hair of the Dog'? RamJam's 'Black Betty'?

Jim Croce, Mamas and the Papas, and Fleetwood Mac...I am good to go then.

Shorty

I have a 6 hour MP3 of Bert Kinister whispering softly, "You control the cue ball, you control the cash!"

Lynard Skynard, The Eagles, AC/DC, Jackal, Thorogood, Creed, Nickleback, Default, and Godsmack. I think they "relax" me.

Back in the day.

Back in the day when I would play any tournament and money game I could find, I would always listen to Van Halen 5150 on a cassette player I would keep in on my belt.

If I didn't have my walkman I would play NIN on the jukebox.

Now I prefer to listen to specific songs, sorry no names, any Van Halen, any Stevie Ray Vaughn, Creed, Three doors down, and a bunch of singles that I have on a two gig RIO MP3 player. I try to never play without it.

Yeah, 5150 is one of the greats.... I have some great college memories associated with that music... I used to kick-off every Friday night after class by popping in that CD.

That's funny as heck!

I thought I was the only shooter who had Kinister whispering in his ear...

Some good ones from Burt are:

"Don't cheat the pocket. What other areas of your life worked out when you cheated? Put the ball in the hole."

"Control the speed. Look at what you did! You need to get the off the steroids I tell ya. He shot the ball and now he is off in Zanzibar."

"You need to control the cue ball so that you have an angle. Without an angle, your position is worthless, unless you are playing two ball."

I think that some of you out there may be able to determine what tape most of these quotes are coming from, if you are a true Kinister fan.

Classic rock. Stones, bruce, dylan, petty. I find it easy to hear the familiar tunes in the background and get the enjoyment out of it, while also being able to focus on the task at hand.

JAZZ, IMO it's' got style and rhythm. Just the way I like to shoot, with style rhythm, not to load. Great for practicing. :)

This is a Hard question, I can't spell half the bands names. All Santana, All Alman Brothers. I guess if it's good, I can play to it.

There is a guy that plays in my thursday night league, he will load up the juke box and play Sinatra and the sort for hours.. drives me nuts. I dont have any real favorite (some older hard rock is good, and some hip hop, sometimes country.. just depends on my mood) but anything super mellow kills my game.

Loading the jukebox on league night is a great idea! You have to make sure you (and your team) don't get caught in your own trap. I guess if you have an mp3 player and headphones, you could play some of the worst crap you could find on the jukebox and still block it out, while your opponents fall into melancholy submission. Hahaha!

My favorite music while playing pool - none at all.
If that isn't available classical, jazz, or the blues. Not too loud.

I like Nat King Cole, but sadly most pool places don't play them.

There is a Nat King Cole Christmas song CD that is really worth having if you get forced into playing the Christmas standards, that man can really sing !

But for pool, I rarely practice at home with popular music playing, for sure no music with lyrics. If there is any music playing at all it is Mozart or Vivaldi or JSBach or Handel etc. Good classical music makes an excellent background for cerebral work imo. It got me through Engineering in the 70s, which is a testament to something I'm sure.

On the drive to the hall lately I have been alternating between The Monks "Bad Habits" and Matt Mayes & El Torpedo. I can do air guitar while driving but it kills my pool game.
