What is your largest run vs 9 ball ghost?

I have recently set a personal best at 10 on my 9 foot Olhausen - plan on beating it soon. I find it helps me focus my practice when there is a very clear goal.

So wait, you ran 10 racks in a row but didn't beat it?
What are you playing, race to 30?

Although I don't play short-rack rotation that much (compared to 14.1 and one pocket), about a year and change ago, I set my personal best at beating the 9-ball ghost in a race to 15. It was actually a proposition bet with someone who didn't think I could play short-rack rotation well (but he himself didn't want to match up with me), so off I went, sliding beads, until I got to 15, then I hit the wall (tired / silly mistakes), at which time, the ghost caught up with me.

In 10-ball, my personal best against the ghost is 10.

This is all on a 9-foot Diamond Professional, btw. (Not a Pro-Am, but one of the earlier models that I believe is called merely "Professional.")

EDIT: ah, I see I need more coffee. Just now noticed Gerry mentioned largest run against the 9-ball ghost. In that case, Gerry has me beat :o -- I've run 8 in that same race.

His personal record is ten racks in a row. His statement implies his record before was nine racks in a row. He thrashes the ghost regularly.

I would like to see some more videos vs the ghost without magic racks.

That's pretty damn strong, Sean.

I'm sure my best run against the 9-ball ghost is 9 - I really don't recall ever playing any sets against the ghost that were longer than 9, but I do recall cases where I started out slow, fell behind 3 or 4 to nothing, and then ran out the set. No idea in 10-ball, but probably not more than 5 or 6. I always use a wooden triangle rack when playing the ghost, and I seem to slug myself about 20% of the time when I play 10-ball. I normally play the 15 ball ghost in practice (1-15, not 61), but not too many packages to speak of, and probably none over 3 or 4. I did run a 3 on a diamond bar box one time, and I ran a 2 on that brutal Gold Crown at Marietta Billiard Club - the one with 3 7/8" or 4" pockets. Those were probably my biggest achievements against the ghost, and IIRC both occurred after long layoffs... hmmm.

Aaron:

Actually, I edited that post probably while you were in the process of responding (sorry about that). I needed more coffee at the time :o -- didn't read Gerry's post correctly. He mentioned largest run -- not the largest successful race win. In that case, my best is 8 straight racks against the ghost.

I don't like poeple that can run out 10 racks of anthing even with ball in hand

I don't really do the ghost thing, but my high run in both 9 and 8-ball is 3 racks. In 8 ball I may have had a chance to go higher, but it was in a tournament and the races were only to 3. Guy broke dry, and I ran out the "set", if you can call a race to 3 a set.

I'm pretty sure my ball in hand run out is about the same.

I stink.

Oh, gotcha. I was just about to add you to my "Don't Ever Play This Guy" list. :)

The 8-pack is pretty damn strong too.

Not sure what my record is against the ghost. In matchplay its 10. Can't see my self beating that, even against the ghost.

I too would like to see runs without the magic rack or tapped table used!!

I beat the 9 ball ghost 1 time in a row a couple of times. My next goal is to win 2 single games in a row. After I can do that I will start to worry about beating the ghost in a race to 7 or 9

I'm right there with you, brother. Cant even conceive of 10 in a row. Nice work.

I'm right there with you, I can't seem to get past 3 racks in a row. I don't play much on big tables, so I don't bother with the ghost thing. Once in a while, I'll do the bank ghost, but mostly I just like to play. :o

Don't see why you can't play the ghost on a smaller table, just make sure you use the right tip and cue for that size

I do OK with the 7 ball ghost, I have run 4-5-6 racks of that on good tables before. I guess I'd have to get the last 2 from A players to play good with them. Or is it the 7? Eh, either way, I'll need a spot hehe.

JB and I had a wager a while back and if I could run five in a row against the ghost on video he was going to leave AZ forever. He gave me a month to do it. This video was from that very day and was the only serious attempt I have ever really made to deliberately run any kind of package. My attention span isn't generally long enough. You can see by the end of the video why JB is still a member here. He skated by the skin of his ass :) I was on four a few times that day before giving up with this one and letting him off the hook.
