Our masters cities started today. I play masters but am only a 5/5. I text my captain last night asking if our other 2 players were going to make it today as they sometimes work weekends. He said yes they would be there. I told him good that I probably wont show and that I thought we needed to throw our best line up and try to win this thing. He said I was part of the team also and I said yea...the worst part lol. I told him I would show and keep score and cheer the team on if nothing else.
Now I admit I do have a lil ego and do believe anything can happen in a match...even a race to 7. I am also a realist and know I am way outclassed in this league by quite a few players.
Also being a realist ....even though i have won several upsets during the session chances are slim i can do it in cities where every one is a whole lot more serious than a regular night out. Also i did not want my captain to feel obligated in any way towards playing me . I appreciate my team mates letting me pls on their team and letting me learn whatever i can from them and my opponents . However i did not want to hold them back from having a chance to win this thing.
So that's my train of thought concerning this tournament. I am surprised that other lower level players in masters dont feel the way i do.
Take for instance the Las round we played today. After we won the first 2 matches we threw our second best player. The other team had their captain.....the worst player on their team and their best player available. The captain throws himself. I am thinking ...wth ? ? Why did he throw himself ? is it a case of every one is going to play...you know....win as a team ...lose as a team. Did he really think he was going to beat our second best player ? Did he not realize he just threw whatever chance of moving on in the tournament out the window ? We were both in the losers bracket.
Now i know upsets can happen because i have won plenty of them myself but in this instance i would go.with my best player giving our team their best shot at moving on and live to play another round. Well i am glad he made the choice he did because our team is still in it tomorrow.
