Mechanical Rack - Anything other than the other two

Sorry for the confusion.

i have

a plastic, a sardo, magic, an old antique brunswick wood rack, but the one i use is a very heavy wood rack, $20.00 on ebay

Not enough choices on the poll. Or should I say, the choices are too general in description.

FTR, I use a Delta-13 most of the time and a Magic Rack some of the time.

At the poolhalls I frequent, I use whatever they supply on their tables. I took my Delta-13 to league night once and everyone complained that the rack made too much noise  and quit using it about halfway through the night. Another time I took a Magic Rack up to league night and not only did no one know how to use it, they'd never even heard of it (and we wonder why pool isn't more "mainstreamed" ;)).

Maniac (yes, we have backwoods hillbillies here in the D/FW metroplex :sorry:)

I agree about the Delta-13. The first time I brought mine to a league match many years ago, my opponent asked me if I was taking machine-shop classes in the evening, and if this rack was the course-completion project for the final grade. And, obviously the noise was a distracting factor as well (the leather noise suppressors were not available yet, at the time).

Later, when they became available, I added the leather noise suppressors (the ones available off of Executive Billiards' website), and that changed everything. It sounds like a wood rack now. The only issue now, is whether your opponent will reject this rack, and go grab the house rack instead, because he thinks he'd otherwise be giving you an advantage with "this highfalutin precision rack-thingy." (Which doesn't make sense, because you'll obviously use the same Delta-13 rack for him!)

Backwoods hillbillies in Texas? Nah, say it ain't so! :p ;) :D

Master Rack

I had the chance to use the Master Rack once. It worked well. It applies pressure to the rack of balls inward from all three sides. And seems less convoluted than the Sardo, you load everything from the top like a normal rack and you can see what's happening as you apply the pressure and remove the rack. I believe much cheaper than the Sardo too. I suppose for games with fewer than 15 balls, you just rack as normal, then remove the extra balls. If I had a table, I would buy it. I don't know why I haven't heard or seen more of this before. I did see an IPT challenge match video on you tube where they were using it.

I have never used the magic rack, but I can't abide them. I know a lot of people say they work great but, the concept of leaving something on the table that will alter the outcome of the break at times, just doesn't sit well with me.

The Delta 13 is a great rack, just make sure you line it for the noise.

I didn't vote because it is not categorized.

Please believe me, I'm not trying to be cute in the least.

If your cloth, balls, table and a wooden rack are all in good shape, what do these racks offer over nudging the balls forward with your fingers, making certain each ball is touching its neighbor, and grasping the wooden rack by the back two corners and simply removing it?

This is a good idea for a poll, but the choices seem flawed to me.

A choice of "plastic" could be a plastic triangle rack or maybe a magic rack?

What is a mechanical rack?

I'd like to suggest to the OP that he either clarify in his OP or start another poll.

BTW, I use a Magic Rack for 9 or 10 ball and prefer a Delta for all 15 ball games.

You know the wood racks the come with Diamond tables? They are very thick. I assume the reason for this is help prevent the wood from warping so the rack stays true as possible. Has anyone ever considered or made a plastic rack made with the sides of such a large thickness? Plastic is less likely to warp than wood anyway, but especially at that thickness, right? Seems like it would be cheap to make too.

But aside from the issue of making a rack that will remain true, I agree with your post. On the other hand, a better rack might be helpful when playing conditions are not optimal, which we all have to deal with a lot.
