What kind of spot do I need at 1P?

I just want to know what a reasonable spot is, I just need a chance to win, not a lock.

I can run racks in 9b and 8b, 4 in a row is my best in both. High run is 62 but that was a miracle, I'd do well to get into the 30's, but I don't play that game.

The top guys around town offer me 9-7 but I can't get there with that. I've gotten 10-7 from a couple of them and beat them or broke even.

I've only been playing 1p a couple of years now and by no means every day, probably a few times a month. So I would say I'm a better 9b or bar box 8b player by far than a 1p player so far.

So anyway, if I wanted to play some some for 20 or 50 a game, what would I need from a guy like Mark Hadad (who's probably the best in Denver)? I'm thinking 10-5 but I don't know.

I'm not a one pocket player so take my words for a grain of salt.. They are completely different games and 9 ball and 8 ball skills (other then some basic ball knowledge) really don't help ya out much.

I'll play my roomate all day long all the 9 ball he wants to play.. We're pretty close at it, but I think I have a bit of an edge if we played for the long haul, or any larger dollar amounts.

I'll kill him in straight pool.. but when it comes to one pocket it's not even close. He beats me like a bad orphan.. We've played plenty of games and I don't think I've ever won one.. Maybe one, but that's about it and I'd call that one lucky.

You'd have to play with 36 balls to get a reasonable spot from Mark....like 30-6 or something...:)

Just kidding Alex, but Mark is a really good 1p player. Before he moved there he played at the hall I play at here. One of the old timers here told me that there weren't enough balls for me to get a spot from him.... I don't know how much better you've gotten since I played you, but I think we're pretty close and I started playing 1p about a year ago as well.

I'd try him at 10-5 if he'll give it to you. I think he's a favorite to win that way, but it would be a good place to start.

btw - Tell CO I said hi if you still see him around much.

Cheers,
RC

Alex,

Probably 10-5, but I doubt Mark would give up that. He might go for a higher 1/2 the balls like 12-6....or probably 12-7. I think that would be a pretty good match up knowing both of your games.

Shame on you sneaking up on Mark like that. :)

Personally, if I can't get the balls I need, I go for my scratches don't
count;)

Yeah I don't think that's what he offered. lol. I think he said we can start at 9-7. I just smiled. He's a nice enough guy and all and I want to watch him play so I can learn but he's never in action when I'm around.

I'll tell Chris hey.

BTW, where did we play?

I agree and I'd play him 10-5 even if it's not enough, but you're right, he's not goign to give it to me right away.

He offered me 9-7... who's sneaking up on who here? Besides, all's fair in love and pool.

Alex

I know Richie Richeson in Tampa has given out some ridiculous spots and won. 11-5, 11-4, to people who could shoot pretty durned straight.

His thing was tho.. You were always frozen to a ball. ALWAYS. It's real hard winning in One Pocket is you are often frozen to a ball, and that's the ONLY ball you can see.

So if you told him you'll play any of the following, which do you think he'd like best?

$5 a game even
$7.50 a game at 9-8
$10 a game at 9-7
12.50 a game at 10-7
$15 a game at 10-6
$20 a game at 10-5
$30 a game at 12-5
$50 a game at 15-5

wow, Alex. It's been two years since we played?! You played pretty sporty for your first couple games a 1pocket :-)

Hey Alex,
I don't know what is fair between you and anybody, but keep this in mind. As it pertains to playing a champion, it is all about how many balls YOU have to make, not them. FWIW

just my opinion

i have been around it along time,i don't play it very often myself, but if your gonna mess with any kind of champion, and you are say an average one pocket player, you better get alot more than 2 balls,or the only thing your gonna have left at the end of the night is your own.i have seen champions give above average players 5,6,7 balls and its torture.it's all about the moves.you better make him go to 12 or so if he's a champion and maybe the breaks cuz he'll trap you on his and will be able to turn the break around real fast.plus once he gets behind the stack it's lights out.5 , the hit and the pick would be a nightmare for an average player against a champion player, and it sounds like a hell of a game.jmo.

I have very little one pocket experiance myself. Just learning the game so what I have to say might not mean much, but a friend of mine made it a point to me that being new it would mean a lot for me to have to only go to six. Saying that I may be able to get two runs of three pretty decently. Going more than 6 could meand a 3rd sell out by the other guy, which may be hard to come by. Just a thought.

Also two weeks ago I watch a pretty strong local player play Efren one hole. After about three hours Efren was up three games, Efren was giving 10-6. $30 a game.

"Hey how about we play some for $15 a game...but Ill take a ball less for 12.50 a game..."

I'd have to go with the 50@15-5. Not sure how long I'd stick around but I'm guessing longer than I should. lol.

Aw hell I don't know, 18 months, 2 years, I can't remember. Yeah, If you call handing you 20's sporty, I guess I played pretty sporty.

hey, I'm coming out there in a couple of weeks. I'll try you some again if we can find a time that works.

OH, what would HE say? I'm guessing he'd go for the 50/game but not the 15-5. Maybe he would. The more I learn about this game the more I think beginers have no shot at it. You just have to take your lumps.

Like I said, I just want a chance to win, of course that's the last thing he'll be looking to give me.

I mean when you hear about the spots Efren gives to very strong players, I feel like I couldn't get enough weight from him, I just don't know the game well enough to even try.
