What makes You Off

This can happen on different nights or it can happen in the same night.

What causes you to able to make almost every shot you take and 2 minutes later you can't make a shot?

Dawgie,

I've learned over the years that I can trust my stroke, I just can't always trust my head. I'm the type who can worry about things or get high strung. It's always best for me to have my mind in order before I ever shoot, or I'm wasting my time. Another funny quirk with me is that the longer the session, the better I play. If I take off a day or so without shooting, I can feel it the first 1/2 hour or so when I play again. Then it all comes back. The thing that I always have to work on is my mindset. I've worked very hard on my fundamentals and my stroke, and now, it's all muscle memory. For the most part, my head (mindset) determines how I'm going to shoot that particular day.

It's called "The Jack A$$ Syndrome." You get that too?!?

What makes You Off

Well, I get off on beautiful blue eyed blondes, beautiful green eyed blondes, and beautiful girls in general. Luv that black hair and blue eyes too. :p Was that the question?

Yeah, this happens all the time with me. Usually when I go to the poolroom with a ton of cash and some guy offers up an incredible spot. I'll play and then find out I'm in a trap and ... Wait a minute. I thought this thread was "What makes you GO OFF"? ...I'm sorry... This is sooo embarassing.

tap tap tap ... the Inner Game in a nutshell.

You can also easily miss anything when you try too hard .... that's your "mind" at, um, "work" ;)

Dave, be the ball ... dooo dooo dooo dooo

Hans Delbrouke makes me go off!:D...sorry, obscure refference Smorg might get.

Like Terry and others have said, It's a mind game for me now. When I'm in dead stroke my preshot is the same for every shot and I'm into the game thinking well. When I'm distracted the voices start......

I'm hungry...hmmm I wonder if they say they are hungry IN hungry?

hey, that guy over there has a nice cue...wonder if He'll sell it.

everyone is watching me...nah....maybe...

does my butt look big in these jeans?....LOL

A better question may be how can you recover from that feeling of not being able to make a ball.

Over the years for me its been to refocus on my stroke, specifically shortening my backstroke and increasing my follow through consciously and the feeling passses and confidence returns. Try it, it may work for you.

Also, recalling that you have made this shot that is making you feel uneasy a thousand times before while adjusting your stroke as I mentioned puts things in perspective.

adjusting your stroke????

Well, my game is straight pool. Its the game I enjoy most. I'm no world class player, but I am a 30 to 50 ball runner commonly with a high run of 78. I've been dabbling with this game for about 45 yrs. Primarily a weekend warrior these days when I get the time to play. My aiming system? Umm, in the pocket? LOL.

Usually when confidence decreases follow through also decreases and strokes become jabby even if only ever so slightly. When this happens, accuracy suffers and the entire effect snowballs.

Most people who play this game with any regularity know where the points of aim and contact are. The missing comes from pulling up on their stroke due to poor focus and lack of concentration. Devoting a conscious effort to follow through often helps bring back confidence. Consciously shortening the backstroke will help provide some accuracy to the delivery while you gain back your confidence. This has been my experience. Of course if you don't have a stroke to begin with .... :)

Lack of intrest, mostly, this happens to me alot these days. If I dont get out there soon I might as well hang it up, I spend all my time wasting away at the table for what? the money is no good, and I really havent the pride to continue playing unless it means something.

These days I cant even get a game without someone being a cry baby. Im sick of the bs myself. So no real advice, I quess I had to vent a lil. sorry bro, but id say if this plaques you get some help from a decent instructor or just stay away from the table untill the desire to play overcomes the stalemate that you set subconsiously.

I start losing my game when I play certain people. These people are the ones that take forever for each shot while trying to play perfect position while being all fancy doing unnecessary 3-rail setups. Then they mess up and get mad and start complaining.
When I play these people I get cold coming to the table so I cant' shoot. I also get really impatient and then start rushing my shots and then I get out of my own routine.....yea I need more practice on my own stroke and mental game though. :(

someday I will get my own good routine down and I wont' let anything distract me.

This one guy that hangs around the place I shoot. I can be shooting my best game and he'll walk through the door and I instantly fall off. This guy is the most annoying person on Earth. Its terrible man.

^^lol. but yes, for some reason there are just some people I can't stand being around and I always shoot pool like crap when they are around.

At yesterday's tournament we played at a different location. wow.. it messed me right up. The pockets were tight if you came near the rail, but they were fine if you hit the outside? Of course I didn't realize that until after I was done and a very good player told me about it.

so, facing different tables that play differently, different speed cloth, and different pockets then I'm used it, I blew chunks :)

I went back to my familiar pool hall and played pretty well (normal for me).

Weird....
