what other custom cues hit like a SW?

Try an Olney

I have never shot with a SW, but I have been told that Olney cues are similar in hit. Whether or not you agree, go for an Olney. They play great.

A $1,000+ Shurtz cue hits almost identical to a Sowest. Of course, how you have it made will affect the hit too. But, I directly compared my $1,100 Shurtz to a $2,800-3,300 Sowest (Fancy Sowest) and I could only detect only the slightest, and I mean slightest, difference in the hit and feel.

But the balance of the Shurtz was better for me, a little more forward balanced than the Sowest, not a lot, but some.
Hey Snap...I was gonna buy a cue but can I buy your dog instead?

Personally, I like my puppies covered in stripper glitter and obnoxious perfume.

...Or white wife-beaters and a lot of water.

...maybe nothing at all except pasties and baby oil?!?

I don't know about puppies, but that's exactly how I likes my Chickens

it seems that i should be looking into a rick howard cue... thanks a lot guys.

You can't go wrong with a Howard. There are a few for sale here or you can contact Rick directly and have him build you a cue. He is easy to deal with

From reading all the descriptions of Coker cues on eBay proclaiming to hit and look like a SW, I figured someone would've thrown that name out here by now.

With the high demand for SW cues, how hard would it be for soemone to pump out a few counterfeit SW cues with the same tapers and brass pin and try to pass it off as a Franklin era cue? Or even take it a step further and get the pin engraved with a fake number.

I've always heard rumors about a cuemaker or two in the mid 80's supposedly making Balabushka copies and selling them to foreign collectors as the real deal, and was just curious if there are fake pre-date SW cues floating around that might even fool the experts. On the internet years ago, one person made this claim, but it was never substantiated.

Omen cues play similar. Pete is a stickler for design, also. I've had two or three and they all play similar. Just bought another one.

Omen's are nice cues, but they don't play anything like a Southwest.

Pure sales pitch imo.
How can Coker with it's so much different taper than SW hit like SW?

My friend and i were talking about my fascination with Southwest cues. i had very few chances to play with one, but on one occasion, i got to use a jerry franklin to practice before a tourney. my cue was in the shop getting retipped and i was just playing lights out with the SW. i thought i was all in my mind at first, but i swear, it played so damn good! i've been searching for another cue that hit like that since.

i don't think i'm ever going to pay upwards of 2k for a cue. all i want is a plain jane player. so if anyone can recommend a cuemaker or brand whose cues feel like the hit of a jerry SW, please speak up!

oh btw, i'm looking to spend about 800.

also, what gives the SW its distinctive hit?

I hear ALOT of good things about the way Judd Fuller's cues hit. You can get their JT-1 for the price you want to spend and I'm not sure I've ever met a Judd owner that didnt like the hit. You dont see many for sale here, the last one I can remember was Monica Webb's cue. Search it and even pm her and ask her about the hit. Last I heard it was a 10 month wait but Trudy Fuller will damn sure help you out with anything you want. Just a thought..

IF you want a kinda stout in the handle with a thin collar , big pin and phenolic collar, check out Rick Howard or ALex Brick cues.

Makes you wonder huh.

I played with a Coker for about 20 minutes and that was long enough for me..

I heard......

.....this cue hit better than a SouthWest!

i guess because not a lot of people have played with one. i mean, at my pool hall, there's a barry, but the owner never lets anyone shoot with it, and in the pro shop, there's another barry, but it's unchalked and i don't think it's meant to be played with.

i played with a coker too. i wish i could appreciate the hit because it's so distinctive, but to me, it played so stiff, i would rather use it for breaking. i called it a "battering ram" to the guy who owned it. he agreed.

as for judds, howards, sugartrees, bluegrass... these are virtually unheard of here in hawaii. Tads, scruggs, mcdaniels, and SWs are the majority here.

right now, i'm using a chris nitti.

Another home run for Bruce..

Tip
Ferrule
Density of shaft wood
Taper
etc etc etc

Go to VF and do the Pepsi "Cue" Challenge

Thus the reason on two cue hit 100% alike.:)

how about buying a sw shaft then having someone build you a butt for it. and of course using the same construction methods and balance point as seen on regular sw cues... do you guys think this will give the closest hit to a true sw?
