What Recourse Do I have?

How much money are we talking about?
This may not be criminal.
If it is possibly criminal, you need to choose: criminal vs. civil.
Obtaining a satisfactory result on either path is unlikely.
Its more complicated than can be properly explored here.

Life Lesson: Escrow, Escrow, Escrow.
If it is worth doing, it is worth doing correctly.
Otherwise, don't bitch if you get bit.

Sorry to hear, I also had a deal go south for a shipped cue on Offer Up. I belive I used PayPal. Offer up didn't do anything because the transaction wasn't completed through them. PayPal would cover me, but required me to try my bank first. They refunded me. Unfortunately no repercussions for the scammer other then my bad reviews to his fake profile.

Learned to only shop local and do deals that can be done safely in person.

He listed some cues on offer-up.

I contacted him about buying them.

We are on opposite sides of the country.

He said he couldn’t figure out how to complete the sale on their platform.

I wanted to use PayPal. He refused.

He wanted to use Zelle. I refused.

We agreed that I would pay via postal money order.

I sent the money order.

It was cashed within a day or two.

It’s approaching 90 days since.
OP, sorry you got burned. I am on a lot of the cue for sale forums and fraud is ripe right now with these type of similar complaints. I am not that familiar with money orders so not sure if you have any recourse that way from my limited understanding with them it's like sending cash. Always use PayPal goods and services period. If seller won't accept immediate fraud red flag. Hope your not out a bunch of coin....

I don't have/use any payment app largely because I don't buy/sell much of anything as normally buyers (of anything) are trying to get things far too cheap. I just can't reward that cheap-ass behavior. Would rather trade or sell something locally or gift it to a friend that appreciates it. BUT, I post to say I totally agree on the PayPal goods and services standard. (y) I don't see deals so great that sellers can't either absorb a couple points or at least split them.

WTF???? Jack Ruby??????????????????

Well the person with problem was advised who & how might help, sadly this is one of many crimes. Big deal to authorities, no just another case to work.

Someone ripping person off on cue desk is not high profile crime.

Someone might live near the bad guy snd inquire for buyer.🎆🎇

In 2020 I got a quote for some carpentry work. He said he was busy for about a month but then would hop on my job. He wanted 50% down to commit to the job and start date. I paid. After 7 or 8 months of excuses, I asked for my money back. That's when he told me he was terminally ill and didn't have the money and couldn't work. I actually believed him (that kind of stuff does happen). But then I spent some time on google and people were still leaving him positive feedback on the work he was completing (recent feedback). I sent him a text with a deadline to return my money along with a long list of actions I would follow through on if I didn't receive the money by that deadline (all legal actions). He overnighted me a check. I wasn't bluffing.

Who does cue escrow?
Good ole Proficient Billiards, among others:

Escrow and Inspection Service……. $150
(add $25 for international escrow)
So many times in this internet industry you can find yourself in a deal that you wish that you hadn’t bought into, I have been there myself. Customers call us up and we discuss cues that they see on the internet, because everyone knows that the internet is the cheapest way to buy cues. One of the things that usually happens in internet buying is that you see a far away picture or a vague description of the cue and you are not really sure what you are buying. Our customers ask us what we think of a cue and we cannot answer them from a picture or description unless we have it our hands. The service that Proficient Billiards offers involves the buyer or seller contacting us (usually the buyer) and requesting an inspection. Anyone who is trying to sell a cue that doesn’t have any problems or issues will have no problem having a 3rd party look over the cue….. if the seller does, then you have to ask yourself what kind of deal you are really in.

What we do……

Accept guaranteed payment of $100 + return shipping charges (for when the cue leaves here) from either the buyer or seller
Receive payment from the buyer (made out to the seller) and Receive the cue
Take a series of detailed pictures (we have the latest in digital photographic equipment)
Weigh and measure the shaft sizes
Look over the cue for damages and general condition
Email both parties the pictures and details of the inspection
Upon approval… package and ship the cue to the buyer and send payment to the seller
Upon non approval… package and ship the cue back to the seller and send the payment back to the buyer

not sure about usps money orders, I would start there tho. if they can't help you, what's the next step?
getting personal is a last resort, but I wouldn't hesitate if it came down to that
I guess you could call the cops, I'm sure they're familiar with the complaint and could maybe advise you
especially these days, it's tough to ignore doing biz online and even with "legit" businesses, stuff happens
moving forward, if I had to transact online, especially with individuals, I agree with this
Always use PayPal goods and services period. If seller won't accept immediate fraud red flag.

good luck, let us know what happens
