What size are the pockets and balls on an English 8 ball table. The table being used on the stream right now looks very solid and well made. Johnnyt

TY Dave. Anyone know the size of snooker table pockets. Johnnyt

Per Wikipedia on the Information-Superhighway:

Pockets

A snooker table has six pockets, one at each corner and one at the center of each of the longest side cushions. The pockets are around 86 mm (3.5 in),[clarification needed] though high-class tournaments may use slightly smaller pockets to increase difficulty. The amount of undercut (trimmed underside of the rubber cushion's protruding nose at the pocket opening),[10]:8 if any, has a strong effect on how easily a ball is accepted by the pocket (the "pocket speed"). On snooker and English billiards tables, the pocket entries are rounded, while pool tables have sharp "knuckles". This affects how accurate shots need to be to get into a pocket, and how fast they can be when not dead-on, including shots that run along and against a cushion. The WPBSA defines proprietary pocket templates[9] for the widths of the pocket openings (corner and centre), the curvature of the cushion noses and the undercut. The WPBSA and IBSF rule books' equipment sections do not actually specify the measurements of these proprietary templates[9][8] and their details have been a closely guarded secret[11] that varies over time, requiring that the templates be dated.[12] The organisations do not recognise tournament play or records (maximum breaks, etc.) if not performed on tables that conform to then-current templates.[12][13] A popular theory for this secretiveness is that the professional tables are actually made much easier, for more exciting shot-making on television, than amateur tables in snooker clubs.[11]:ok:

Pyramid pockets are 72mm. Hope that helped you determine the size of english pockets!

The World Snooker rules don't specify, just requires conforming to their templates.

English 8-ball rules have no specifications
http://www.epa.org.uk/wrules.php

The ever authoritative web says:
WEPF pool (sometimes informally called "British-style" or "Commonwealth-style") is played with 2 to 2 1⁄8-in (51–54 mm) balls, and this type of table has smaller, narrow pockets (the width is calculated as the ball diameter multiplied by 1.6,)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billiard_table#Dimensions_2

That makes snooker pockets 3.3 inches - balls 2 1/16"
and English 8-ball pockets 3.2 inches - balls 2", cue ball is 1 7/8"

If you were using 2 1/4" pool balls, the pocket width would be 3.6" :D
And for the American Snooker purists 2 1/8" balls would give a pocket 3.4" wide.

For me, it ain't the size of the pockets so much as it is the fact they wrap the cushion around the sides of the pockets.....no face on the pocket, just cushion. On a good snooker table, you touch the cushion anywhere.......oops you missed.

Not to mention the fact if you are on the end rail, you could have an 11 foot shot to have a go at on a 12x6.

I love playing on a snooker table, though it is very difficult.

Thank you for the info. So that makes the pockets on the English 8 ball table about 4". Thats what my Valley table is. Cool. Johnnyt

Depends, some of the 6ft tables have really small pockets, the 7fts are around the 3" mark, the photo gives a little perspective.

Thank you. I think it's a cool game. I watch it anytime it's streamed. It has to be tough as I've seen Melling, Appleton, and all the top players over there miss many a 5' to 6' straight in shot. Johnnyt

I think snooker pockets are 3-1/8 or 3-1/2....it was either the mongoose or a snake that once told me what they should be but not that most are the right sizes that we see on snooker tables in bars or rooms because of shîtÿ work done by a guy who really knows nothing about pool tables let alone snooker tables!!!
I'm not saying all the snooker tables in this country are whack but there is more badd than good' I know mark gregory down in Atlanta can rebuild and rework those snooker rails to play so good that if a lot more people catch on to how good the old tables play after he's done that snooker might be a growing cue sport here, new or old tables need TLC to play at there best.

can't beat seeing for yourself!

Johnny,

You can't beat seeing for yourself! I think you should import a table, then I can come pay you a visit. I have been wanting to try english eight ball for ages. Sometimes they play on super tiny real congestied tables and take to the air a lot, often off a rail or two. It's a three dimensional game the way some play it.

I know from changing my Valley to 4" that it makes a big difference on bar tables. Those that say it doesn't probably have never played on real tight pockets on a BB. I have 4" and can imagine how 3.5" would be and think i'm going to find out soon. Johnnyt

Hey Johnny T Did you shim your pockets to 4" or did you buy custom RidgeBack rails? How are you going to make them 3 1/2" pockets? Are you going to buy new Ridgeback rails or what?

pocket size

Hey Johnny T I got some of the spring loaded pocket reducers on Ebay. They make my pockets 3 5/8". I'm glad I am able to remove them as I dont think I would like them to be a permanently 3 5/8. Center pocket hits or else.
