What the the determing factor for choice of Screw Type, or Thread Size

depends on the style of cue and my feeling for the day and how i invision the cue being finished
5x16-14 piloted i can do ivory and SS but sometimes i like traditional 3x8-10 solid ivory i also use thin walled ss with 3x8-10 sw style pin

I personally like flat faced, 3/8X10, 3/8X11 or Radial, other option is 5/16X14 stainless. As long as I know which one before I join the cue together.

mike you joint your cues together differently depending on the pin or joint used? explain.

one of my early cues i tested forearm into handle it was an exotic forearm. i also tested double tenon into 1/2 phenolic. think i saw it on dz website. now i only make my cues handle into forearm 5/8 tenon. my concern is consistency.

not saying any way is wrong but id love to hear thoughts on this matter.

Personal Preference!?

I think this gets into the personal preference arena......lots of reasons for choosing SS vs plastic vs ???

It really gets down to what you like in the feel of the cue and, yes every pin style feels slightly different.

I think that you need to play with a few (lots) of cues to find the right choice for your particular hand/feel.

I can tell you all day long that this or that plays lights out or hits a ton or whatever but, you are the person that needs to decide what feels right in our own hands.

That being said, I guess, you may still need to do some more individual trials/&/errors

Not a cuemaker, but I've hit with a few cues with various pin configuration and materials. What I found out is...

A well made cue will hit a ton. :deadhorse:

thats how i feel.
i base my joint on era or style of the cue.
if im doing a traditional 4 point 4 veneer its 14 ss or ivory depending on collar i use. im not a fan of ivory joint and nickel rings. i love traditional cues.

i always read posts about "no metal" this and that but remember alot of top makers in alot of eras made great playing ss cues. thats all ppl wanted ivory or ss. danny janes told me one time he couldnt GIVE away a cue that didnt have ivory or ss joint.

likewise. if i use a ss joint i use an aluminum pin. if i use ivory or thin walled i go with a ss pin.

ive heard of other makers changing their tenon based on balance. thats what i thought you were saying. maybe im not that advanced but i like doing things the same way. i can understand tho for instance if a heavier exotic forearm is used the tenon may go into the handle for balance. i dont core. i also dont do many exotic forearms

Lots of different construction techniques. I personally core everything because I have chosen that path, It doesn't shorten the time at all for me.

What Screw/Thread do you use mostly and why?:groucho:

Depends on the hit, feel and sound you are looking for that dictates the best joint-pin for the job...

I personally like the stainless-steel 3/8-10 becasue it's versitile and you have one less part "brass insert" in the shaft to cause noise and soak up energy !
