a lot of people say efren, he is just execution master. it's funny, i think he'd be a horrible teacher unless you play like alex pag. or something.

DEAD:

Irving Crane
Harold Worst
Willie Mosconi

ALIVE (TEACHERS):

Mark Wilson
Jerry Briesath
Allison Fisher (yes)

ALIVE (PLAYERS):

George Breedlove
Danny DiLiberto
Grady Mathews

Harold Worst had great all-around skills and uncommon intelligence; ditto for Mosconi and Crane. I pick Crane for his SJM-like dedication to defense.

A leading professional continues to recommend Allison Fisher as an excellent instructor, despite being an arch-rival. Mark W. and Jerry B. have impeccable reputations and skills.

Forget about the younger active players; I want lessons from the tested road warriors (with communication skills so I didn't list Efren).

I will replace a couple for me though.
Dead-- Wimpy Lassiter, Mosconi, and Cornbread Red. Various skills associated with these 3 players.
Teachers -- I've never really had lessons, but know of Mark and Jerry's skills. They are un-doubtedly 2 of the best in the world.
Players -- I have discussed some things at tournaments with George, practiced with him a few times and could learn a lot from him.
Buddy Hall would be my next living player.
Regardless of communication skills Efren would be my all time highest choice to learn from.

Nick Varner, Ralf Souquet, and Efren Reyes are the three for me.

Hi SJM,

I really like your three choices listed.

Soquet: For mechanics and outstanding mental game preperation and game playing planning, focus and concentration combined with supreme patience.Sure we all like all out flashy offense, however, sometimes there's a need to grind.Who better to learn from than Ralph.

Varner: For supreme knowledge of the game, mental toughness and never give up attitude.Nick has the mind of a true Champion.Nick knows a lot of systems and has really, REALLY, studied the game.

Reyes the Magician: Brilliant unmatched creative genius, outstanding feel, smooth stroke and supreme confidence. All of those Phillipino twist strokes, spins, kills and secrets would be intresting to learn. If I could just have a portion of his creative genius, feel and stroke I could crush some of the guys I have a desire to beat locally:D

Other choices:

Allison Fisher: Perfect mechanics combined with a mind that knows how to win.She treats the most simplest of shots as if it were a razor thin cut off of the rail.Unparralled in discipline.

Bugs Rucker:
I have his 3 DVD's on banking and this guy is a banking genius. If one could bank like Bugs, how could anyone possibly play you safe?

Grady Mathews:
Not for his stroke, however, his knowledge(The Professor) of the game, Kicking systems, saftey play, banking and his HEART(perhaps 2nd to none) for pool.I would love to also sit down and hear all the pool stories this man could tell.

HAL HOULE:

I HAVE HAD A BRIEF TASTE OF HIS AIMING SYSTEMS AND WOULD LIKE TO LEARN THE OTHER TWENTY OR SO HE KNOWS.HE WAS ALSO A FRIEND OF THE LEGENDARY RALPH GREENLEAF SO I'M SURE HE WOULD HAVE SOME INTRESTING CONVERSATIONS.ALSO LIKE TO HEAR HIM DISS OTHER INSTRUCTORS:D TALK TO HAL PERSON TO PERSON AND YOU WILL FIND THAT THIS MAN REALLY HAS A HEART TO SEE THE RECREATIONAL PLAYER IMPROVE.

Bert Kinister:

Niels Fiejen wouldn't stick with this guy if he were a clown. Apparnetly Bert can really teach.

I want to apprentice under Dan Louie. He was so generous with his knowledge. I had the ultimate pleasure of watching some matches with him and he would share with me what he thought, which was very insightful and I learned a lot just from listening. He is not arrogant and never made fun of anyone that we were watching although some players were obvious inferior to his level. Whenever I asked him a question, he would answer them patiently and never said my questions were stupid. He played with me a few times and he was so generous to teach me shots and share with me what he would do in certain situations. His approach is so down to earth and encouraging.

I heard that he is the house pro in Parlor and I really wish I could go there to take some lessons from him. I think he would make a great teacher.

Richard

Nick Varner

Grady Mathews

Last choice would be if I need to learn anything else, :) after a week with each of the TWO above

I think they would have covered it all I would ever need to know.

My Top Three

Johnny Archer
Michael Coltrain
Mark Haddad

I do not like the way the Filipinos shoot pool, don't get me wrong there dam good they are the best in the world, but I prefer the american style of pool. How they use that long bridge is beyond me.

Ceulemens- great at all billiard table games, including artistic shots. Literally wrote the book on three cushion (Mr 100), won so many titles its sick. Still plays great in his 60's. He might beat all the US players with his opposite hand (unless Shooni runs 18 again like last weekend in the US Nationals)

Rempe- great player, excellent fundamentals. Souqet took some lessons from him and it worked out ok for his 14.1 game...

Haydon Lingo- just so I could look at the mythical lost one pocket charts he supposedly had. More realistic choice: Grady or Freddie. Both are excellent bankers and one pocket players. Might have to pick Grady due to 14.1 knowledge.

Kind of like saying,"I don't like the way African-Americans play basketball, don't get me wrong, they are damm good-they are the best in the world, but I prefer the Caucasian style of basketball." How they jump so high is beyond me.
Sounds a bit racist doesn't it?
Just my $.02...

You just don't have a clue do you, Style and Race are too different things, They have a different style on how they play pool than the americans do. I should not have to explain myself on this. Think about it.

Talking about not having a clue! You said yourself that they are the best. Is your goal to play like the best? Hmmm... I don't like the way the style LOOKS? , so I won't play like that. That statement is ridiculous. Still sounds racist too me.

ps. My analogy was totally on point.

It is a mood point to argue about I don't want to be the best can careless about it. If you watch any kind of pool you will see how style takes effect. Look at Efren, Django, Luat and compare them to Archer, Coltrain and Haddad. "Style my friend, Style". I prefer the american style of pool, So go **** yourself just Kidding:D
