What tip do you use

Tips, tips, tips....

I've been trying new tips but i can quite find what i'm looking for. I keep coming back to LaPro's Med-Hard but they just don't hold up very well and i'm tired of replacing or messing with them. I'm looking for a simular hit and play without all the hassle. Price isn't a concern. Thanks,

French Champions if I could still get them, lol. So I use a Triangle Med but I would try a layered tip from Talisman on my #3 shaft after reading Tony's post...18 months is some good longevity for a tip.

LAyered tip all the way

I used and prefered le pro for years, installed many for the guys in my pool league. I swore by them and said i would never goto a moori cause of the price. Well in vegas one year a guy had a good deal on some moori's so i bit. Well needless to say no more le pro for me. They mushroom easily and i have had some that the side would fall out leaving a cave in the side of it. The other posters have mentioned the inconsitency and that is true. Had many differentg hardness from the same box. Moori medium is what i prefer. Took no time to adjust to and they last for ever. I shape it only after installing it and never touch it again.

pat

Troy . I am moving down to san jose this weekend maybe we can hook up nd hit some balls. where do you play.

I switched from lepro to a tailsman med and then to a everest. I actually like both the tailsman and the everest quite a bit. The everest I think plays better, but it took me a couple weeks to get used to how it plays.

Played lepro's for about 15 years, and finally switched last year. Glad I did.

I use a Hercules medium hard layered tip, and they do real good.
I have been real pleased with Hercules.

Same here. Went from Champion to Moori medium and then to Hercules and the Hercules has been the best by far.

I am puzzeled as to why you shoot with a Triangle if you like the super hard hit of a Champion. I shoot with a Triangle also, but it has a much softer feel than Champion. If you want the hard feel of the Champion get a Sumo water buffalo tip. Press it in a vise before putting on and cut the tip down low like the Champions were. THat will be about as close as you can get.

Try a Triumph/ they are med hard...really!
The tips are sort of like the old Champions.
They hold up well and they bite the ball quite good. AND THEY LAST...

If you remember the FC tips with the red backing you'll also remember that 1-outta ten were softer than the rest, that was always the one I chose. Thanks for the inside on the Sumo, I may try one.

I see many people prefer the layered tips. I had a Moori for an hour or so and went back to Le Pro. I paid $25 for the tip and absolutely hated it. The tip had the proper arc the problem was with edges of the layers and the click sound when I hit the ball. I could feel little steps of the layers along the arc with my finger. If you don’t understand what I am talking about, draw a circle on the computer. Look at the circle; you can see that the lines are little squares (square pixels) offset to make the shape. It is not a smooth curve. How do you shape the tip to avoid this or is that normal.

If you're looking for a similar hit, I'd say go with Sniper. You won't have to mess with them and they'll last forever.
I love my Sniper. I have tried Moori's, Talisman's, Hercule's and many other layered tips and none have the feel and consitency my Sniper has.

Jason:

If a "click" sound was present, then the bond between the base of the tip and the ferrule may have been incomplete. Glue didn't cover the entire face of the ferrule (and tip's base) allowing a bit of forward and backward play between the tip's base and ferrule. But in all fairness, the sound of the hit that arises from the simple compression could have changed as well.

I inspected the tip it was fully glued. The tip just made a different sound. I could have adjusted to the new contact sound. The edge of the layers is what I didn't like. I felt that it might lead to a miscue. I would really like to know if everyone can feel the layers edges on the tip after it is shaped???

I would like Mike W, to post on this. From what I have seen on here I would take his post as the Gospel on technical cue Q & A…

How did you shape your tip? The edges on my tips are smooth.

The click sound is probably not something that's the result of layered tips. I've never had a tip with a 'click' sound. I did have a click sound that was from the fact that the tip wasn't glued onto the ferrules correctly.

WB Med Talisman

I have tried quite a few tips in the last 18 years. I finally found a tip that I have stayed with for the last 4 years. The Water Buffalo Medium tip from Talisman Billiards gave me more feel and the least amount of maintenance of all the others I have tried. I admit the Moori Med is quite similar, but I like the feel and the price of the Talisman much better.
