What To Do Here?

several months ago was playing and my esteemed opponent left me in this situation. any recommendations as to what a guy does here?

the cueball is frozen on the rail, and its a tough shot on the '8' Ball even if the cueball wasnt frozen. however, if a guy could just get the c'ball back to anywhere around Points A or B he should be in business.

CueTable Help

well if you were really going to go for the shot and position then loading it up with right of course would bring you over for the 9.......goes without saying its a hard shot without english to begin with. I would probably try to cross corner back it with some right and get shapes if i made it, hopefully bank short if i missed to leave the 8 on the short rail and the cue at the other end.

On an off note but along the same lines, i was watching the buddy hall pool pointers that someone put on here without the commercials, and found one of those super useful..........the 8ball was about a diamond from the corner, 9ball was at the opposite end of the table, cue ball was against the long rail with the 9ball, and you couldnt put draw on the cueball. Buddy hit the ball with left english, made the ball and the left english brought the cueball off the rail and sucked it all the way back up table just like it was draw........tried it and durn it if didnt work great. Anytime you are against a rail or something this sure would come in handy, some probably already knew this but it was new to me :)

play safe.

i would try and hit straighish into the eight, and try and keep the white around where the eight is, and send the eight to opposite it on the other side.

assuming you want to win of course! the attempt at the pot with loads of right is bloody hard and extremely low percentage. for me anyway...

I like a safe as well. Depending how I'm shooting, I may even try to drive the 8-ball 3 rails to try and tuck it behind the 9-ball. Given the angle DCP showed, the 8-ball should bank three rails to about two diamonds short of the top right corner pocket if you hit it slightly less than full.

Play safe. There are many ways to do so here, and stevepwaldon mentioned one of my favorites. I would pretend to shoot it three rails to the top right corner pocket, and intentionaly shoot it short. Use inside english both to shorten the angle, and to keep the cue up table. The eight should land on the middle of the bottom rail, and unless it somehow lines up a perfect combo or carom with the nine, you should be in good shape. The key is to make your opponent think you tried a crazy shot, missed, and got lucky with the leave.

This is what I'd try. It's pretty likely to leave the other guy at least a little tough if you miss.

I'd play for the bank:

CueTable Help

The safeties suggested sound low-percentage. I hate low-percentage safeties, and I think I lose more games because of a missed safe then shots I went for and shouldn't have.

Anyway, the 8 ball for me is very makeable with center-top, but totally impossible with any other english. So I'd play for the bank shot, and give myself a chance to win.

Is it just me, or do the arrows never stay on the old wei table anymore? Is it the latest upgrade to shockwave that's doing it? Seems like it never had problems until recently.

That works the best and looks better. ;)

I think a safety is prudent, but I'm surprised noone has suggested the bank suggested here:

START(
%HR9G2%Ip2O4%P^6Z9%QZ6[6%UT6D2%VS3F3%W[4[0%XU2C6%YD5J5%ZN0C7
%[S3Z5%\C5K3%]k0F0%^T3Z9%eB4a4%_O0D0%`R0H1%a]6Z0
)END

You can back cut the eight easier than it may seem. A little practice on it works wonders. I was amazed how easy shots like this are, relative to how hard they look. I forgot to move the cue aim spot. Hit it with high running english.

This particular safety is a powerful weapon. It comes up all the time in 9 ball, often when another ball on the rail blocks the pot. It's about as exciting as practicing the lag, but it's worth the effort to learn the angles and speeds.

Free shot...

Hey the good news here is your opponent took a shot at the 8-ball and missed...so your shot here is better than no shot at all...I say take advantage of the free shot and go for it...

Don't take any chances on the first shot...just slide the 8-ball into the corner nice and easy...just make the ball and the cue ball will leave you a bank shot on the 9-ball to a long corner...just roll in that long bank for the win...

If you miss then your opponent might have a hanger in the pocket...but maybe not...and he/she will have a long shot on the 9-ball with the cue ball near the top rail...hey you might even get another free shot...

I like

Zeeder's shot. Just make the ball FIRST, then decide whether to cut the 9 or bank it.

3 rail safety is difficult especially considering where the cueball ends up. 4 rail saety is better, but still have cue ball problems.
