What to do?

Pocket the Nine and force a bank shot on the 8-Ball. Make sure the 2-Ball stays in front of the pocket....SPF=randyg

I think I'd play safe. Hide the cue behind the 2, trying to bury it so it can't be hit short rail.

You'll get another ball in hand and still be in the same boat. May be ok if you're playing the three foul rule.

You need to make the combo and get the cue ball out of the area. I would try to get the cue ball to an area that would put him into a double kiss preventing a bank attempt.

That would be the crucial question- are you playing 3 foul= loss? If you are and the 9 cannot be made w/ BIH, I woulld advise you not touch anything and hand the shot back. If the 9 can be made by your opponent, then you are not looking so good.

As said, at least make him bank the 8!

Did that twice on consecutive ball in hands. I will admit I did lose this game. I should have made the 9 and played the cue ball up table as others suggested.

Let us know if 3 fouls= loss, please!

Well, I am quite the novice. After seeing the diagram with the actual cue ball placement I am in agreement and will have to keep this in mind for the time that is comes up. It has more than once in my play.

This is a GOOD shot, not necessarily great. If I were left with this, my return play would be a safety. If I'm on a barbox or left reasonably close, I may even opt to kick into the 8-ball to insure I maintain the block.

Or I can do this:

I say it's "good" because there's a reasonable chance your opponent won't see these safeties AND even if they do, they still have to execute it. If I have reason to believe my opponent will play the safeties I show above, I think the best play is to nudge the balls and force a stalemate.

If you want to get tricky and really get your opponent thinking, take the foul and move the 8-ball into the cluster.

Officially, there is no 3-foul rule in 8-ball nor should there be. If there were such a rule, I wouldn't even bother pocketing balls half the time.

Riiight...I am pretty sure I have never played the game for $ outside of a bar, so I am clueless.

LOL, it's fair for you to assume there might be such a rule. Almost every other game has some variation of one.

Can the 9 be made with ball in hand? If not, then I think this is the way to go. If it can, then I'd play the cue ball up table. Either way, your job here is to prolong the game and make your opponent earn it.

Although it's not recommended, I'd probably take a quick look to see if this was available, too. If the game doesn't mean anything, there's a good chance I try this while saying; "I have to know if I can pull this off" ;)

Yes, the crappy thing about diagrams is everything is too damn small! If you have the room, you might be able to just keep the 2-ball right there and freeze the cueball between the 2-ball and the rail while pocketing the 9. If you get that, GAME OVA.

Yeah, that's the best play I think (assuming you have the space). The key is to NOT hit the cueball below center. It should be a soft hit, slightly above center. The cueball and 2-ball will stick. You'll need to favor the left side SLIGHTLY so you can get the cueball in that little spot.

EDITTED THE DIAGRAM. I didn't like how it looked.

With cue ball in hand, I'd put the 8 against the 9 and in front of the pocket.

Sure, this give CIB, but so what.....it isn't a pretty.
