What to look for when looking for a table.

...
I'm looking to get a used table in the 500-600 range, that will probably need some work. I'm not so worried about cosmetics as quality of the table. When looking for a table what are some things to consider? Brand, Model?? Solid wood/mdf?? 3/4 in slate or 1" slate? I looked on my local cl and iwanta trader and found 10-20 different tables for sale, I just don't know what I'm looking at when I see them. I see name brands I have never heard of and will so a search on here but not find much about them. After being here on this site it seems Diamond and Brunswick are the preferred tables, but right now I think both of those are out of our price range.
Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Here's a snip of the original post. Doubt the price range is going to land a "quality" commercial table so what's left - furniture style or bar box.

SUGGESTION TO OP
Post your city/state and maybe a few folks can look at CL in your local area and offer a recommendation.

Olhausen Belmont
Olhausen Champion Pro 2
Olhausen Reno
Brunswick Allenton

What I thought was weird was the Champion Pro says it's made from laminates, well, the entire L-series are laminates. Which I assume are a cheaper alternative to real wood. Why would they use laminate on their commercial table. I thought laminate was bad.

I've been leaning toward the Belmont, as the wife doesn't like the idea of having the world OLHAUSEN plastered across the side of our pool table. What's wrong with Brunswick furniture tables?

My comments were made to be a bit more specific to these posts. Not all brunswick furniture tables are made the same i know. Its funny though because on the BB home page they advertise the metal corner as a special hidden difference.

Thanks guys for the replys. After reading your posts I have decided to save up some more cash and wait for the right table to come along. The gf doenst understand why I will not just go out and buy the $150 Sears brand table on CL. I figure I want a quaility table because after we get married and in a few years have kids I want somewhere to hid out at home!!!

paitience is the best IMHO, If you spend six weeks surfing and dreaming you'll start to see what is available and what it goes for. Once you are familiar with the "going" price, you'll know when the screaming deal comes along. You ll have cash in hand and be able to act quickly with confidence

That is good advice!

Should I be looking for a 9 ft or a 7 ft. There are very few 9 ft tables around here and all the leagues are played on 7ft bb. Whats the advantages / disadvantages?

As previously mentioned - post your city/state.
Not only can others assist you in your search but there may be a member nearby you with a table for sale.

Hip bump

A real quick test of a table is bump it with your hip. If it moves it's probably a cheap table.

Demo models on a showroom floor are easy to move when they have plywood instead of slate installed so a blanket statement that a table is "cheap" if you can move it by bumping it isn't entirely correct. If buying a used table privately tho I can see some merit to that statement.

This thread is probably a good opportunity for us to put together what could be a sticky on the subject.
