Rick,
You're right about greyghost's reply to post # 40 and you're reply to him that set things off and prevented me from posting, for the simple reason that it was obvious you two had a history which I'm not privy to.

Greyghost says, " You can't give new students the whole world. You can't scare the shit out of them." That makes sense to me.

Rick, I suspect what you have a problem with is when greyghost's says that sometimes he and his fellow instructors withhold information from students "For their own good."

OK Rick.....if it's reasonable to withhold information from beginners for their own good, I'll assume there is a point in the development of the student where you believe they should be educated in their options of how and what they want to learn, and you believe that grey ghost and some of his colleagues are making these decisions for them, to the detriment of the student.

The thing is, I can't make a judgement as to who is right or wrong because both of you are making references to having already argued out the issues in MUCH more detail in previous threads.

I, and other posters, who might have some thoughts on these issues, are forced to stay on the sidelines, because we may not have read these previous threads, and hence, don't really know where the battle lines are drawn.

I just can't seem to get a handle on exactly WHAT is being argued about!

So Rick; if you'd tell us WHAT type of information you believe instructors such as grey ghost are withholding from students, and WHEN this information should be given to students, I'll listen to greyghost's reply and maybe I'll have an opportunity to chime in.

As I said, I agree with you on most things. I think it's a shame you're getting attacked mercilessly. Maybe if more posters had the issues and points of division clearly mapped out before them, they'd discover you are justified in your opinions more often then they believed

Hi Tim,

I'm glad you're not afraid to post as some have been made by those that bully, but if you show that you agree with me on certain subjects, then there is a good chance that you will be 'attacked'.

I do not agree with how you laid matters out with the words that you used.

Picture this...

You're a H.S. Student that has to do a book report on some type of sport. You go to the library & get some books about tennis. They are older books & all of the pictures show wooden tennis rackets. When school is out for the summer, you decide to take up the game. So... you convince a friend to take up the game with you & you two go to a sporting goods store & all you see is wooden tennis rackets & each if you buys a wooden tennis racket. (Meanwhile in the back of the store were all of the newer light weight larger headed graphite tennis rackets that are more advantages with which to play.)

You & your friend start playing & keep playing & play for years with those wooden tennis rackets.

You did so because you never knew about the more advantageous light weight larger headed graphite rackets because the store owner that was selling tennis rackets never presented them to you.

You did not know about them because all you saw in the books were wooden tennis rackets...

And... when you went to buy a tennis racket the store selling rackets only presented the wooden rackets out for you to see. The owner only put out the older wooden rackets because that is with what HE believes the game should be played. That was all that the store owner presented to you & your friend... he ONLY shows the Graphite Rackets to those know about Graphite Rackets & wants to try to play tennis using them.

That was the experience for you & your friend & everyone else that comes into his store.

You basically had no choice but to buy & play with a wooden tennis racket.

I know this analogy is not technically a one for one relation.

I also know that I am NOT the one that took this thread in this direction of instructors.

ALL Best Wishes for You & Yours, Tim,
Rick

If that is the case, then either you and your friend are playing in the Mojave Desert and never saw anybody with different tennis racquets or it is Ray Charles playing Stevie Wonder.

If a person is that interested in tennis and played for years, they would have to have been dumbasses to not see or learn different things from watching those around them. If there was nobody around them, then they would only be playing each other and it wouldn't make a difference because they would both be on equal playing grounds.

Not everybody in the world is blind or a dumbass.

Actually, YOU are the one that took it in the direction of instructors with post #38. Here is a quote from you- "The thing is that I think too many are taught to only do one...
ALL of the time.

Post #5 nailed it right away. But, go ahead and cry victim for what YOU started. And don't forget to call anyone that disagrees with you a bully and that they are attacking you. Keep repeating it, some on here are gullible enough to actually believe it.

Not everybody in the world is blind or a dumbass.

I'm rather sorry that you seem to have difficulty actually seeing the matter at hand & continue to basically misstate matters with the hypothetical examples you put out about how others learn & what they MUST see.

That sporting goods store is one of the most highly recommended stores in the nation.... so Tim & his H.S. friend gave it all the credibility in the world as to what it sells & IF it is pushing & selling wooden tennis rackets...

then they MUST be the best rackets with which to play & anyone that is not playing with a wooden racket must be playing with an inferior racket.

Were you ever in sales or have you ever bought any high dollar item or service?

If you are not up on what you are shopping, you can very easily be misled simply by the omittance of information. I never did that when I was in sales. I never "sold" my clients. They bought from me after I gave them ALL of the facts. I even refused to sell to some when I sensed that they did not have a good & complete understanding. They usually called me nack with a question or two & THEN bought form me when I agreed to sell to them.

Buyers remorse is NOT what a GOOD salesman wants. Money is just the by product of a good relationship between parties conducting a transaction.

Best 2 Ya.

I did not say that anyone should be thinking about any of this when actually playing as was suggested in post #5.

And...

My Dad "taught" me & he was a salesman & NOT an instructor.

Everyone does NOT learn to play through buying lessons from "PAID INSTRUCTORS"

Many are "taught" by team captains, friends, hall owners, etc.

Rick, it's always a veiled attempt to discredit "instructors" with you, and it has been for some time.

I don't get it. And no, you don't have to explain it to me.

One last thing, something I'm sure matters very little to you. When Keeb comes on here and posts, he gets lot's of peoples attention. He has a history here. Same as a great many others. When they talk about "defending" AZB, there is a reason. It is a community. OUR community. One that has been built over time.

We've gotten to know each other. We talk about things, silly things and not-so-silly things. We argue. But it is our "family" with whom we are arguing. I can tell you for certain that no matter how much I've seen Neil and PJ argue over the years, both of them would admit this is "our family". For better and for worse.

Well over 10 years for many of the regulars. Many virtual miles traveled together, lots of water under that bridge. Lot's of things discussed, very few resolved, and still we come here, to share our love of this game.

There is no conspiracy against you, specifically. But when you come into this house, and run roughshod over thread after thread, taking shots at long-time and well-respected members of this community, you will get the response that you have seen.

Why you continue to instigate that response is beyond me, and most others here, as is evident. When you started here, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, figuring you had little experience in a forum culture. You've been here long enough now that you ought to be able to see how things work.

Last thing, before you go and inform me how much professional help I need..... Understand this. You have done the one thing that no one else has, in the long history of AZB, and the RSB board before that..... you have gotten a group of people including Neil, PJ, Lou, Keeb, Sean, Scott and many, many others to agree on something. So I suppose you have accomplished something.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna regret posting this. :p

***edit*** I've been "full-rep' for years, and I can't make three balls. Getting rep from someone who is "full-rep" means very, very little.

Why the deflection, Rick? Did you not ask in your first post in this thread "why" ? Then, why are you now attempting to make the mention of instructors a bad thing? Who said that one only learns through paid instructors besides you in your above quote? Why even bring that up? Strange how you mention the first part of post #5, but yet ignore the last part. Very telling indeed. And, of course, he was proven correct by you.

I'm rather sorry that you seem to have difficulty actually seeing the matter at hand & continue to basically misstate matters with the hypothetical examples you put out about how others learn & what they MUST see.

:lmao: Speaking of hypothetical examples that misstate matters and not actually seeing the matter at hand (a scotoma btw :D) .....

So... you convince a friend to take up the game with you & you two go to a sporting goods store & all you see is wooden tennis rackets & each if you buys a wooden tennis racket. You make up a totally unrealistic hypothetical example to make your point (whatever that might be) :thud:

Dave <-- thinks sporting goods stores no longer sell old style wooden rackets .... or hickory shafted golf clubs

If it is the BEST sporting goods store in the world, it is probably making a good profit. If it is making a good profit, it probably has sales people pushing the "high dollar" equipment, not the cheap crap. The fancy new stuff costs more than the old wooden stuff, so they didn't do their homework. Maybe the guy who sold them the racquets preferred wood because he was an APA-3 in tennis...who knows? Maybe they were clearing out their old stock and saw a couple suckers come along.

When I played tennis (never worth a damn), there were racquets of varying prices and made of wood and "other" materials. The most controversial racquet at the time was the Wilson T-2000 that Jimmy Conners used and it was round and made of metal, not oval and made of wood like the majority of other racquets, and was actually smaller than most racquets in surface area.

Even though Jimmy Conners was a world champion and played with it, I don't recall many, if any, of the other pros using it, but tons of amateurs bought it.

The next racquet that was "controversial" actually caught on and became a hit. I think it was the Prince oversized racquet. The first few pros using it were considered to be "sissies" and "cheaters" because they couldn't handle a regular sized racquet, but when they started winning everything, everybody switched to them.

I'm not pushing racquets of any type or even tennis, I'm just letting you know that I knew about what was available and the properties of each before I ever bought my first racquet. There were magazines and TV at the time...I paid attention to what was going on and watched the pros.

The same goes for pool cues. I researched who was considered the one of the "best" makers in the world and what was considered the "best" materials before I ever had one made. For my first truly custom cue, I chose Richard Black back in 1978. I didn't just choose him because he was the first guy I found. I chose him because I wanted a Balabushka, but he died before I had a chance to buy one and I wasn't going to spend a couple thousand dollars for a used cue that cost $150 the year before he died. Richard Black made cues that were almost identical to the 4-point Balabushkas and he was highly recommended by everyone who sold high-end cues and also I had seen them and hit balls with them.

Just because some people live around a bunch of dumbasses and don't pay attention to what they are buying or doing, doesn't mean everyone does.

I used to sell Nikon cameras part time just as something to do because I love photography and had cameras. Never once did I own a Nikon, but I knew enough about them to be able to explain the pros and cons of them, their features, and how they worked.

I can't count the number of times I told people to buy something other than a Nikon because they could get another brand cheaper that did equal or more than the Nikons for far less money.

What you speak of is a small 'boys' club compared to the total number of members & visitors of AZB that might hardly never post nut only read.

That is part of the problem with AZB in that there are small clicks that thing the the site is theirs & they only want what THEY want on it & only for purpose that THEY want.

You're entitled to your perception(s). That entitlement does not make your perception(s) accurate or correct.

I have stated rather many times now that I am NOT against instruction nor instructors in general.

There are several here on AZB that I rather admire for there knowledge, wisdom, & insight.

Every coach of this in the world was teaching the same thing until this guy came along.

Do you have a closed mind, Bruce & can you not think for yourself but must follow others?

Open your eyes & actually take an objective look. Others see the truth & facts of matters, but they generally dare not speak up in public.

Perhaps I should not say this but a certain older pro player/instructor said to me in PM that most of the 'instructors' are like 'circus clowns'.

I was NOT the one to take this thread down the road it is now on...
but I don't run from bullies & if it is a beating that the bullies feel they must give me then I can & have & will take it before I go running away from them out of fear of the beating.

Individuals that want to silence others because they are in disagreement with them are 'bullies'...

& I NEVER want to be friends with bullies & condone bullying.

The constant referrals to PMs by "so and so" doesn't mean ANYTHING to me, maybe it does to somebody else.

All the PMing BS means is that little secret cliques are formed in little secret alliances against the other so-called "bullies" or whatever somebody fantasizes they are because they don't agree with them.

Anything I say to anybody, I say it to their face on here...not behind their backs in PMs, unless it is something that pertains to only that person and I (such discussing a cue purchase, etc.)

Anything I say on here about playing, I would recommend that people try it out instead of just taking my word for it. If it doesn't work, then come back and say something or remain quiet...it doesn't matter to me. I don't post anything on here that doesn't work for me. If it doesn't work for you, then maybe we aren't doing it exactly the same way or maybe it is something that is unique to me. Either way, if it works for me, I'll use it.

I'm not here to win friends and influence people...I'm not Dale Carnagie. I tell people things I have learned...whether it is useful to them is to be determined by them.

It seems that you have joined the group as this you second tirade.
I'll include you with the group when I pray for the bullies.

I augmented one of my sig lines but I left the part that says..."weak minds discuss people"

Best Wishes for You & Yours, Bruce.

Well, there are only two instructors on here that have played pro pool. You ran off Stan Shuffet, so that just leaves Fran. I bet she just loves you stating that.

Also, as usual, you totaly misrepresented what he said. This place used to be like family, not a good ol' boys club. But, what would a post be without you right there to twist it?

Why are you quoting me & highlighting that sentence for this post of yours?

I get unsolicited PMs & green rep comments all of the time.

I said that I probably should not have relayed that but it entered my mind to try to make a point to Bruce & I did not run from it, even though I can only imagine what some are going to bomb me with for relay that comment of another. No doubt someone will demand that I provide 'proof'. In the day of certain Chivalry that would be cause for a trip to The Dueling Oaks for calling me a liar.

Best 2 Ya.

I highlighted the sentence because you posted it as though it was "significant" and I was pointing out the "insignificance" of it.

I'm out...don't have time for yip yap and drama.
