Hmmm, I guess that I do "know" what Neil did. To a degree, I suppose, having been here through that time period. Matter of fact, I've been here through a lot of things. Seen a lot of stuff pass thru the 1's an 0's of this here forum.

Funny part is that I see the value most folks bring here. I've seen the good and the bad in many an argument. I observed the "Last Great CTE War" first hand. Many of our best and most respected members were involved at one point or another. Most of them still post here, some if only occasionally. Despite all of that, most acknowledge each other and their participation here, even if some do so begrudgingly.

I've seen conversations between heated (and in-theory "hated", tho I dislike how easily that term gets thrown around) members here. And I've seen them actually communicate. Many have met in person, despite their online disputes. Communicate. Acknowledge a point being made by the other.

And they all get it. They all belong here, as part of the community.

I'm not lecturing you, or chastising, which is the term you used last time. I'm just pointing out the facts. Yes, the facts "as I see them". I can't point them out any other way. I go out of my way to try and be the voice of moderation, to be diplomatic, to try and see both sides of a given discussion. Dare I say it....I try to be "objective".

It's not a part of being a bully. Or going along with the majority. I can mix it up if need be, and I've done so before, many times. I may not be able to run balls, but I can run sentences rather nicely. And not in "wall-of-text" mode, nor in zen-like double speak. I say what I mean and not ask that the reader figure it out.

I'm sorry that you feel the need to fight here. And make no mistake, that's what you do. You go right after anyone and anything that has popular support here. For some unknown reason. It's all well and good to question things, but to be like a dog with a bone about it, months later, well that's what gets especially tiresome.

Going after RandyG tops that list. RandyG hasn't said a cross word to anyone here in all my time as a member of this forum. Helps any and all who ask, in a very gentle and constructive manner. He is the last person I can imagine anyone having an issue with, yet you continue to hound him. And remember, he is a friend of the Mighty CJ, too.....if CJ likes him, why don't you?

I really hope you find a way to coexist with the rest of the forum, tho I doubt that you are interested in doing so.

yes Rick....I know what it "is" some even refer to it as the 2nd mind, or mind 2......over the past 20 years there has been more and more sports science studies on it.....

besides sports the subconscious controls everything we do out of habit an dont think about. Things that have been done so many times its habitually our way.....we do not think of "how we walk" from day to day......generally when we are performing at our highest levels of ability in many diff areas of life.....like i say often when first learning to walk i'm sure it sucked, and you/we had to think alot about how not to fall.......eventually we learned it by repition and seeing others do it. If we had to think about every little thing we diid when we walked today, we would constantly be tripping.

well does your subconscious understand english? Do you and your subconscious communicate verbally?

What are your thoughts on that?

Very little about the way we play pool is truely natural, in the way punching or throwing a rock might be. We are not designed for propelling a cue with extreme accuracy in a straight line. That's why often when we try to do so, we end up looking rather "unnatural" Your hero CJ has the stiffest, most unnatural cue action I've seen in a top player, but he gets the job done.

Most people who don't get instruction from the start develop a fairly "natural" cue action IMO. Of course some don't, but after a while, something resembling a stroke will usually emerge. I think the stroke most half way decent players develop resembles Earl Stricklands (in general form, but not accuracy). There is often elbow drop and a twisting of the wrist/hand. Quite frequently there is some movement as well (not so much in Earl, but in other natural cueists), because nothing is less natural than vigorously moving one part of your body, while keeping the rest completely still...

Then why seek instruction? Because most people cannot play top pool this way. We cannot compensate for movement and stroke inaccuracies like the 1% gifted players, so we have to refine our fundamentals to avoid sources of inaccuracies. Learn to keep our heads down, consider locking the elbow (I don't think it's right, but a lot of people try this), "freezing" the hand/wrist (again, I don't agree, but this too is a common thing to try). Some people will try shortening the bridge/stroke, of course 4 point contact is something a lot of people try etc, etc..

The point of the rather common sense paragraph above was to show that nearly every method of improving your fundamentals is in some way "contrived" as you say. We are trying to get around lack of the super talent, by applying ourselves and using training to overcome the advantage the great players have. Maybe it won't get us very far, but it sure beats giving up. Every extra ball is a victory and will usually improve the enjoyment of the game. That is why people invent stuff like this, and that is why we try it.

I will relate something that I have seen in youth baseball.

A recreation dept. tried to improve the coaching by sending the coaches to clinics like hitting clinics & pitching clinics. That would be rather like the PBIA putting out a certain curriculum to teach or if almost all of the new instructors are being certified to teach by one or two of like minded individuals that are putting out one like philosophy.

Anyway, what was being taught was NOT natural & was also limiting in that it was basically just a make contact & put the ball in play type of swing. While making contact & just putting the ball in play can be a good thing... it is not hitting with power for doubles & triples & home runs or even an offensive single as it relies on either poor defense or lucky perfect placement.

One of the predominant components of what they wanted to be taught had the coaches telling boys to swing down with nearly every other sentence that came out of their mouths & I was of the 'opinion' that that was completely wrong & it certainly was producing some very bad baseball swings.

I voiced my feelings but was put down with, 'but that is what was said at the clinics.'.

I never taught what 'they' wanted to be taught because I knew that it was wrong & would never do that to a boy or young man.

Then... Major League Baseball Player Randy Bush moved into the area & they got him to give a coaches clinic. Well, I asked him about this crap of swinging down & he immediately said, 'No, No. What you want is the longest distance of flat level swing that you can get. Naturally the barrel of the bat is up higher than you shoulder & it must come down from there but you never want to be swinging down.'.

I think you can figure out the point of that story.

The thing is that if a boy is taught an inferior contrived swing that is contrived to just make contact then he may never find out if he could have been a home run hitter with his natural swing.

Naturally if he can not make contact with his natural swing it may need some tweaking or maybe an over all over haul.

The point is that the coach should not automatically teach that contrived swing until he & the player knows that his natural swing is rather useless.

There are two types of fundamentals. Fundamentals for a natural swing & fundamental for a contrived swing.
