TO USE ON A LATHE THAT HAS BEEN IN STORAGE FOR THE LAST YEAR WHILE I HAVE BEEN SICK. IT HAS A CROSSFEED TABLE AND THE TURNING HANDLES STRIPPED BECAUSE THE TABLE IS PARTIALLY LOCKED UP. WHO SHOULD I LOOK TO FOR NEW HANDLES FOR THE CRANK ASSEMBLIES FOR THE CROSSSLIDE AND THE TOOLHOLDER?
WHAT TYPE OF LUBRICANT OR LUBRICANT/CLEANER SHOULD I USE THAT WILL FREE UP THE ASSEMBLY AND WORKING MECHANISMS?
THEN WHAT SHOULD I USE FOR LUBRICANT AND WATER ELIMINATOR SO I DON'T GET RUST, THE LATHE IS IN MY WORKSHOP BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT IS NOT TEMPAERATURE CONTROLLED SO IT GETS MOISTURE IN THE AIR AND HUMIDITY FROM BEING IN FLORIDA?

ANY ANSWERS ON THE LUBRICANTS?
ANY ANSWERS ON THE HANDLE ASSEMBLIES TO REPLACE MY STRIPPED ONES?

THANKS FOR ANY INFO, I AM IN THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW, BUT I AM GOING TO BE GETTING OUT IN A FEW WEEKS AND WANT TO GET BACK TO WORKING ON THIS?

THANKS

Keep away from teflon/silicon sprays, if an gets onto the wood or cue, it only makes for finish nightmares.
ATF type F (ford) mineral base atf is really good stuff. It can cope with moisture quite well, great lube, cheap, easily cleaned .
The other option is to use slideway oil like houghtons 68 slideway oil.
Cleaning, I would use a scotchbrite/ steelwool and atf oil.
It it is real bad, take the saddle off the lathe bed and clean it all properly.A realpain I know. A dehumidifier and heat to keep the room always above the dewpoint and it won't rust again.Good luck

There is a very fine penetrating lubricant called Marvel Mystry Oil the stuff will penetrate damn near anywhere and it protects. Besides that you can mix it with gas and keep the gunk from building up on the vales of your car, being there is ethenol in everything now.

Hi,

Neil is right on. Never, Never even have a can of silicon spray in you shop. You will never see one in a body shop.

Mike's in the hospital and all he's thinking is lubricants ?

I use ATF . Squirt some on a paper towel and lightly coat the ways and tailstock quill.

Looks you got work. You will need to wear a respirator and gloves . Go to the dollar store and get a few rolls of paper towel . Clean that puppy then oil it.
