What type of tip is on my new shaft?

Just bought a new shaft and really, really like the tip, but have no idea what kind it is. It has a light grey tip which I think is either a sniper or a triangle, but I'm not sure cause I don't have much experience with either tip. I'd like to know what kind it is without having to wait until it's dead and cutting it in half. Thinking of using this tip on my other cues.

I can't see any layers because the burnishing really smoothed it out and made the walls a darker color. When I shaped it with my willards, I didn't see any layers through the crown. This is why I think it could be a triangle, also cause the hit is pretty hard, but this could be from the new shaft.

The tip has a really scratchy sound when I chalk it, like a cats tongue on my face. I've heard this sound associated with Sniper tips. Pretty sure triangle tips are a more coarse grain and wouldn't make this sound.

Any ideas what kind of tip I may have?.

Unless it's an "X" Shaft or Tiger Cue, it is not a Sniper.

Probably a Triangle.

not to hijack the thread but im going to anyway.....im in the same boat, i have a tip on an old schon shaft from early 90's probably, and i think its the original tip, nonlaminated, and i love it, its not terribly hard. Anyone know what schon used in the old days, im guessin its triangle or lepro but who knows?

The shaft is an old Joss, from late eighties or early nineties. The tip is brand new, just replaced, so it could very easily be a Sniper. My buddy has a sniper tip on his shaft, and it makes that same scratchy sound when he chalks up. It's a very distinct sound, never heard it from any other tip I've ever used.

Apparently the shaft used to belong to Scotty Townsend, so if anyone knows what he uses, we have our answer.

Probably milk dud elk master.
Crap, a third option. Don't elkmasters have that blue cloring all the way through?. They are kind of a darker grey as well, but the tip I have is very light grey. I'm probably going to wait until it's cooked and cut it in half, look for layers. If there are layers, I know it's a sniper.

UPDATE: Definitely not an elkmaster, I cut one of my spare elks in half and they're a much darker grey inside than the tip I have. Also, the elk has a grey and white peppered look, where the tip I have is more solid light grey

FWIW, I've never had a layered tip that I couldn't see the layers when I shaped it, or on the side for that matter.

Sounds like a triangle tip. They are grey when scuffed and the side gets very dark when burnished. I use triangles, I have tried others but I keep going back to them.

After considering what everyone has said, I am more and more inclined to believe that it is a triangle tip. Zeeder brings up a good point about the layers, I can't see any, and I'm quite used to layered tips.

Maybe it's time I pick up some triangle tips and give them an honest try. Thanks for everyone's reply, except you Scott, you hijacking maniac!.:D

BTW-my money's on Triangle on your old Schon, pretty sure it's always been the proprietary tip for most cuemakers.
