What Will Happen To All The Aging Pros

I'd just like to say, regarding the subject of this thread, there are many people out there living life without a safety net for their later years. This is not a condition reserved just for pool players entering the "Golden Age". People need to start planning for retirement when they are in there 20's. I have a brother that is 2 years older than me and I don't think he's ever going to be able to afford retirement. I just retired and still haven't touched my 457 plan money and don't plan to until I'm in my 70's. I have excellent health insurance and the reason for that is because I did plan for my retirement in my 20's. Instead of playing pool on the road, I chose my priorities:
1. Marrying my sweatheart and still married for 30 years.
2. Raising two wonderful children - one just graduated from college and the other is still going.
3. Securing a good job that provides excellent benefits and sticking with that job for 28 years.

Now, I'm playing pool full time and loving it. I think I can still cut the mustard, I'm going to give it a try anyway. The nice thing about it is, now I don't have anything to lose by shooting pool full time. For years I've been playing recreational pool, a couple of hours here and there, not enough to get consistent. I can wow some of the locals but I've never been able to consistently play at the level that I thought I could. Now I get the chance to see just what level I can get to. It took me 28 years to get here but I think it has been well worth it! I'll be coming to a pool hall near you one day, watch for me!

OK, I'll keep an eye out for an old man with bad eyes, knees, back, Etc.
I admire your efforts but unless this all is just a very good hustle -
- "IT AIN'T GONNA WORK".

No, I never liked rock hudson.

Shame though wasn't it? Did you see the clip of him at the end? Shocking. I remember my Grandad saying at the time "I 'spected some bloke would walk on the moon one day. I even thought one day we'd have a woman prime-minister. But I never once thought I'd end up looking like Rock Hudson".

When you have a 5 by nine area to watch pool, as opposed to soccer, football, baseball, tennis and other arenas that seat many thousand of fans, buying expensive tickets, it is no stretch to see that pool has no where to go than where they are right now. Hell, in a pool room tournament you can only watch one table, because two tables away is beyond your vision to see what is going on. 5 X by 9 is all we will ever have.

I have state something similar before in another thread on this forum. The bigger the playing field, the bigger the audience. This is an excellent and important point as to why professional pool is not a big attaction for most people. A few months back, a PBA Bowling finals event was held outside on the infield of a baseball stadium with a about a thousand fans watching.

I agree - Sonia has brought forth an opinion I had not thought of.

While Sonia has brought up an idea I have never thought of before (and a VERY valid one), I hate to admit it might be true because of it's negitivity. There is nothing we can do about it!
Chess, checkers, etc have a large following and not much audience either.
The only small field sport I can think of that is gaining popularity is - Womens Beach Volley Ball. Why do you think that is?
If your thinking what I'm thinking - Lets start playing NUDE POOL!

Ps. - I might get paid a pretty good sum to "Sit this one out"!

O.B.S'er,

I think you are missing the point. He doesn't care if it works or not. He has already made his nut and doesn't have to worry about eating catfood for his golden years.

Now your knocking Cat Food!
I happen to be very fond of the Twittle Kitty brand. Especially their "RawOyster/Tuna guts" selection. It is very tasty with a little 2 month old curddled milk on it.

Don't worry OHB, I won't threaten your income any but I am going to have some fun! Unlike you, I just love to play pool and don't see it as a means to take someone else's hard-earned money. No offense meant just acknowledging that you and I are very different people and there's nothing wrong with that.

Your Correct, Rick!

Hey, different strokes for different folks, right?

Just remember, all the people that I take their "Hard Earnd Cash" - ARE - Trying to get my "Harder Earned Ca$h!
Only difference is - They are gambling that they can get mine - AND - I'm bettin I'll get their's.

I'm from Middlesbrough in the Northeast of England. If you are familiar with Brian Clough, one of the towns most famous sons, it will give you an accurate flavour of the species. If not, the entry for Middlesbrough on the Home Office's Tourist Information website simply says "Gobshites".
