What would you do? More cue wondering.

First of all, sorry for starting another thread so similiar to the previous one:

I was suggested buying a used custom, a Pechauer or a Schön cue. I have turned every virtual rock that I have found on the internet, and I cant find one decent custom to fit in my tiny budget of about 700€.

On to Pechauer: I have found a cue that is esthetically pleasing to me. Said to have forward balance too. Sounds great, but it has a Pechauer speed joint, and I happen to have a ton of money on shafts (WX700, 314/2, HP2...) with 5/16x14 (mezz united to be exact) and a 314/3 with a unilock. And none on them will fit on it :mad: And to mention, I have a Exceed extension too...

Schön has one model that fits in my specs, the BW3. It looks boring as hell, but it has a 5/16x14 joint, so I would be able to use the many shafts that I already own. It is really stretching on me money wise, its about 750-800 shipped and taxed to Finland, and I cant get anyone to tell me what is the balance point of said cue. Tried contacting seyberts for it, no answer. It has a Ebony butt sleeve and wrap area, so naturally it comes to mind that it may be butt heavy, wich is not what I want :( Has a weight bolt? So I would be able to machine a piece to make the extension work on it too, hopefully.

On to the option that wallet is so very happy about... A Mezz sneaky. They are wrapless, use the exact joint that I have shafts for, extension too. BUT. It doesnt have a solid maple shaft to come with it. It doesnt have a SS collar I would like to have. And it has roughly the same balance point of my current cue :( So only thing that would really change is that it is wrapless. Cost of this is about 350€ shipped.

Please tell me what would you do. I'm getting pretty annoyed by my incapability to come to a single solution on this one. That is nothing like me usually, but now I'm just lost :confused:

I have narrowed the list to pretty exact specs, and once more I'll share it.

19.5oz, forward balanced - 48-52cm from buttcap
SS joint collar
5/16x14 joint or a uniloc
Wrapless
Preferably comes with a solid shaft. (or a link where to get one)
Is affordable.

Sell everything I own and get one cue with that money, hoping to score the right one :thumbup:

I can make a number of what I feel are great suggestions within your parameters but the reality is, those would be what *I* think is great. You may feel otherwise.

Here is the one key thing I will suggest, though.

If you buy what you think might work at a fair price, if it comes and you don't like it, no big deal, sell it. Even if you lose a hundres bucks (or euros), this shouldn't be the end of the world.

At the end of the day, how a cue feels when playing with it is very subjective. My favorite might be your least favorite.

I say buy what you think will work for you and if you love it, great. If you don't, just sell it and try again.

Of course, ideal would be for you to attend a big event where many cues can be tried but probably you don't have that opportunity in Finland.?.?

I would recommend contacting pechauer and ask if they can make the cue you want with the different joint that would fit your other shafts

Have you looked into Joss? They make cues similar to Schon using the 5/16x14 joint but they come in less expensive and have more wrapless styles to look at. I'm not 100% on the balance point so you might need to do some research on that, but I'd guess it tends to be a forward balance cue as well.

I really like a couple of the wrapless options at Seyberts and they're in the mid-$300 range.
 
I'd either email pechauer about joint, or buy a used schon to try. Most Schons balance close to same spot, and are consistent hitting across models.

Would think with after market shafts they would play very similar.
 
And then the kicker- for all the factual analysis, there is something about a cue that can't be measured, it's feel.

I have had plenty of cues that read like I should like them, but didn't.

You can think about it all you want, but this game ain't played on paper.
 
If you really want a forward balanced cue play with a maple shaft. I've never hit with a LD shaft that felt forward balanced. I play with a Schon 19 oz. 13mm maple shaft. It is one of the most forward balanced playing cues I have ever felt. Just switching to a 12.75mm maple Schon shaft results in a more rear balanced feel. When I have tried several LD shafts the cue feels even more rear balanced, so much so that I can't stand them, even though I shoot just as well with them.

If you are searching for something new you are obviously unhappy with the feel of your current equipment. I personally would sell it off and buy what I really wanted, but everybody is different. You could always try a heavier maple shaft on the Mezz your playing with or a Balance Rite or similar extension. These extensions pull the balance slightly forward, although less than you would think. If you take the wrapless option out of the equation schon has several options and some good looking cues in that price range.

I'll see if I can help, here.

Schons are cored, so it will not be a solid ebony handle, otherwise the cue would be 21oz+, with a stainless joint. When Evan was running the show, all of the handles were a laminated wood. The wood handled cues I've seen by Schon have all had these cores, when I have removed the weight bolt.

The Pechauer speed joint is a modified 5/16-14 thread. It has a threaded top, and then an unthreaded post. Any 5/16-14 thread shaft can be turned into a speed joint by drilling/boring out about 1/2" of the threads with a boring bar, or using a 5/16 drill bit (get a repair guy to perform the operation, please).

Mezz shafts are a little odd, in their 5/16-14 thread. It's not quite an ACME style thread, but it's close. I was able to easily fit any standard 5/16-14 thread shaft onto a Mezz ZZ-SP that I used to have, but I couldn't stick a Mezz shaft onto my Schon. The threads seemed pretty snug, and I didn't want to risk reaming the joint out with a larger pin than the standard Mezz.

Pechauers and Schons are typically weight forward. There's some extra metal in the Schon at the A joint, whereas the Pechauer is wood to wood at the A joint.

The AzB truly has some power, DEXTER pm'd me with an offer on a Schon that I really like, and if everything goes as planned I will be a happy new owner for a nice looking Schön pretty soon :smile:

I have got a lot of great ideas over here, knowledge and personal experiences to give me an idea what would fit my needs the best. Taking from all of you, schön seems to be pretty close to what i'm after. I thank you all who contributed. I will do my best to help you all back if you are the ones in need.

The community around here has changed a lot from what it used to be, but its feels nice to see that there are still so many of you folks willing to help out the others.

I will post my thoughts on it as soon as I get it, hopefully everything works out well this time :embarrassed2: It will take a while, as it has to travel around the globe to reach me first :rolleyes:
 
Actually you could have the Speed Joint threaded more, so it fits a lot of shafts or you can have the joint pin replaced to fit all your shafts & the speed joint shafts too (I think..?)
 
My .2 Save and buy a new cue from Seyberts. Exchange or get a refund if you're not happy. They're great like that,
