What Would You Do???

The correct shot depends on your opponents abilities. There have been several good options already explained. I made the one rail kick on the first try and got position on the 8.

Another option is to shoot at the 7 ball just barely to the right of center. You should play for the double kiss. The 7 ball will go to the left and the cue ball will come back to you leaving your opponent a bank shot.

The double kiss is a 99.998745676% sell out, unless your opponent is a total beginner.

If your opponent is a total beginner, then who cares? An AZBro will win 8/10 all nite long :o;)

You have to kick it. No safe to play and it looks way too hard to cut it in. Plus if you kick at it and make it the cueball is going towards the 8. It also looks like a kick you would hit about 85% of the time... If you know the table I'd say 99%

I was able to cut it in, only problem was I scratched :(

There is another way out of this trap, that will work more than half the time. Go ahead and shoot at the seven ball (medium speed), aiming for the left edge. If you hit it too full the seven will go two rails down to the end rail near the eight, and the cue ball will stay at the far end of the table. Your opponent will not have an easy shot to make the seven and get shape on the eight if this happens.

The second possibility is that you hit the seven thin and it stays up table a diamond or two from the corner pocket. In this scenario the cue ball will come back down to the end rail near the eight ball. Your opponent now has a very difficult shot to make the seven and get back down table for the eight ball. Either one of these scenarios is good for you. What you've done is made it tough for your opponent to get out.

Just try this shot a few times and see what you discover. You won't be leaving any hangers. ;)

I don't think this is the best option but it is just another one. But if you want to bet---Do you think you could get out over 90% of the time?

To all the guys that have said "kick", I'd like to see you pocket the 7 with a kick shot and get decent shape on the 8 ball. I'm not talking one time in 10 - I would like to see it be a consistent shot you can make 60% of the time.

Based on the shot he's diagrammed, you will have to kick at pace to go 2+ rails to get on the 8 ball. The 9 being where it is, makes you play a different spot on the rail than is natural. Also, after you've made the kick shot, the 9 ball could also become a blocker on your way to the 8 ball. I like Jay's options - the safety is the better shot. If the 7 ball isn't frozen, I may also play a very soft kick off the long rail closest to the 7 ball and try to just touch the ball to the rail, leaving the cueball and the 7 stuck together.
