What would you do?

I just want to thank you for this post and making me add 1 more item to my case... a box of 100 thumb tacks in case i ever run into a bunch of shoeless asians

A bunch of women who were at my local joint for a Xmas party and who squealed louder than a pig farm every time a ball went near a pocket already got me to add ear plugs a few years ago...lol

I don't mind chinese players, who are always respectful and polite in my hall, but Xmas parties are something that should really be cracked down upon.

I'm Chinese and I work in China. I promise you it's not a norm for us to start removing our shoes whenever we're indoors. Infact for the longest time that I've played in China I've never met anyone without shoes. Ok maybe save one time where I brought a girl to a pool hall and she was wearing heels that were killing her. I told her to remove her heels cos the pool hall was pretty new and carpets were clean. Her feet didn't smell and they look nice.

Going back on topic, I think if I'm the owner and I've concluded that quite a few regular in my room's annoyed with these shoeless annoying a$$ (of any race or gender) I would definitely protect the interest of my regulars and get them annoying guys to put on their shoes and tone down as they are disturbing other players. If they refuse then out they go. Simple.
It would be awkward for me as a patron to confront other patrons telling them what's right or wrong since I don't own the place. If the owner doesn't do anything and I've been given the green light from owner to tell them off then it's another story.

I think this whole situation was likely just a clash of cultures.

The OP said the shoe situation and the odor was no big deal...The truth is, he mentioned it several times and I suspect it was a point of contention. More likely it was a distraction and nobody likes to be distracted while competing. It can be frustrating and this probably led to the level of conflict. Afterall there's money at stake!

As for the Asians on the other table, they were probably unfamiliar with pool etiquette and perhaps even American attitudes. Some Asian languages sound harsh compared to the timbre of english. It doesn't always mean the intent was harsh. His response to you may have simply been a mirrored reaction to the tone of the OP's remarks or behavior.

Tollerance is always the best policy when dealing with cultural differences and the fact that it ended without a physical altercation is a good sign.

Was the situation handled well.....It's difficult to say without actually being there. I think I would have moved to another table if one was available and minimized the distraction.

Wow that really stinks! Pun intended there. I think you did great! It could've gone better but it didn't. Those conditions were deplorable.:D

Frankly, I'm amazed that the owner would allow any group, of any nationality, to all take off their shoes and play barefoot. That's disgusting.

Some people don't understand manners in a pool hall and if they aren't pool players they just won't have them. They also come from a different culture where personal space has a different meaning. How offensive is it to a devout Muslim that we let our women speak without being asked to? Or show their faces in public? That's pretty obnoxious if you look at it from their point of view.

Can you imagine some religous zealot not allowing this pretty face to be seen in public.
By-the-way guys, my neice Sarasota here, is single again. Her second husband died on their honeymoon from heart failure. (The coroner said by the look on his face he was frightened to death.)
Nonetheless, she's available. You can contact her at Steamer Cue Sports Ltd. Ask for the shipping department.
As for the Chinese, we may well be playing in their poolrooms in the not too distant future. Sayonara.

I can't understand a lot of what religion preaches. Hate and intolerance because you read a different book just don't make sense to me.

I'm glad Pidge kept his cool though. I was just offering a view of the situation from his odoriferous friends point of view.

.

A little racist are we?

2013 and racism is alive and well in America.

First you say it's not a serious game...then you made it serious.

If someone is shooting on a table next to you and they are in the way, you should play position so you don't have to go on that side of the table.

You were way too serious about a game...and only a game.
You got all hot and bothered when you were playing for free anyway.

You did say the guy you were playing was a lousy player....;)

I'm not racist in the slightest. Maybe it was a clash of cultures. But if any one of any race, gender or age was being that disrespectful to their surroundings youre telling me it wouldnt piss you off?

go sit on a cucumber.

Just had to bring it up that they were Chinese.

This is showing-----you are a racist.

LOL...I can just imagine if they were a bunch of white guys and girls that were American and your own age. Wonder how you'd describe them???????

You are in denial...you are a racist.

I have no problem with people from different cultures believing in different things, or living differently, or having different rules of behavior. Neither do I have a problem with people from a foreign country moving to America, yet wanting to retain their homeland beliefs.

But why is it always the responsibility of the American people to go out of their way to respect the new-comer's homeland beliefs while they live here? Shouldn't the new-comers also have *some* responsibility to realize that their beliefs are contrary to those in America? Shouldn't they also make *some* compromises to their beliefs when out in public?

If we're supposed to understand how "obnoxious" it is to Muslims that we allow our women to bare their faces in public and speak openly, shouldn't they also understand if I move to the Holy Land and set up a bikini shop and tanning parlor?

Why do WE always have to understand THEM? Why can't they do the same? Shouldn't the rules be applied evenly to everyone?!?

So because they are unaware what they are doing is wrong, and because they are from a different culture, they somehow get a "free pass" from being told what "normal" behavior in this country is? Not only that, Pidge is supposed to go OUT OF HIS WAY to not offend them? Wouldn't that technically be racist?

Like I said, go sit on a cucumber. You might enjoy it.

Wow...now you show ignorance too.
You come on a public forum asking for advice and now you don't want to hear the truth.

How old are you? Does your parents know you are using the computer?:rotflmao1:

How do you know they are not from this country??????????
So if someone doesn't look white, they must be from somewhere else?

Normal behavior? So it's not normal for people to gather around a pool table and hit balls around and not have fun.

:shakehead:

My problem would be that the owner allowed this! What happened to the "No Shoes, No Service". If they serve food it would be a code violation and what if they stepped on something and sue him.

Yeah great advice calling me racist! Big old thumbs up for that. Don't you think its ignorant calling someone racist without knowing anything about them?

Like Jeff said...I am expected to walk on egg shells around them, go out of my way to not leave a shot on their side of the table? If I went to a foreign country and conducted my self as they did I'd be ashamed of my self. If I ever moved to a country where cultures are completely different I'd respect their way of doing things.

Now for all the Chinese Japanese Korean philipino and Taiwanese players that frequent the club this is the only group who have shown any disregard to their surroundings.

Sounds like paradise, but it will never happen, because of one thing: Religion. But we're not having that discussion and for the record, I totally agree with you. I brought it up as an example people understand and don't see much grey in.

Unfortunately I have a terrible habit of trying to see both sides of the proverbial coin. In the case of Pidge and the Feet I don't think it had anything to do with race, just culture between pool players and people who play pool.
