Just don't know much about the different brands etc. What would u suggest and what are the strengths of the different brands. Thought I might get a meucci, lucassi or mcdermott.

I would suggest the best Mcdermott you can get with your money at your local billiards shop. If this is your first cue, go local and try a few out on a table until you find a cue that you like and hits well.
Learn to play with it for 1-2 years then look at upgrading to something else if you feel like it at that point.

kaiser cues hit and are put together pretty good for under $200.

Yep, with very cheap cues there is a lot of variation between individuals. I've tried a great-hitting no-brand cue priced at $70. Just happened to be an excellent quality and hits great. That's why it's a good idea to find a cuedealer and try out a few cheap cues. Don't go with the looks, just find a cue that hits well. Might be a McDermott, might be a Viking or Joss or Lucasi or whatever.

Good recommendations.

Please add Viking to the list as well. I never heard anybody say anything bad about a Viking, and are as good a value for your money as any other cue I can think of. You even will get a good number of models to choose from in that price range as well.

Personally ...

I don't think you can get a 'good' cue for the money
you are talking about. In my opinion, I think you
have to spend $200-250 to get a decent one.

I disagree...Viking and McDermott both make cues in that range that play extremely well.

You won't get a fancy cue at that price.

Who are sh!ttin'. You got a damn Samsara for $10.

My advice, become buddies with Greg and maybe he'll sell you his Samsara for $100. Hell, that's 10x his investment :D

On a serious note:
I would go after a Helmstetter in that price range. IMO they play as well as Schon for a lot less money.

FWIW,

My Two Cents...

The advice about actually trying a few hits with some cues is invaluable. That is by far the best way to go. Another word of advice. Only you can determine what a "good hitting" cue is. This will be accomplished by touch and feel. What I may like, you may not. If you find a cue that just feels right, then it is worth the cash. For a couple hundred bucks, the cue may not appreciate in value...but who cares? You're a player, not a collector...at least not yet.

One word of warning...once you go custom, you never go back ;)

$92-$156...

I'm suprised nobody mentions Fury when someones looking for a 1st Cue, especially at the $100-$150 price range...while it's true that a good hitting cue is, 'a good hitting cue to you'...there are some basic ideas of a good hit...I have a Fury, it's solid, hits and plays very well, and only cost me $88!...now its $92, but it has a SS Joint, (solid hit), Maple Shaft and is good enough for a Basic First Cue...IMHO...

DL - Entry Line, All Decal - $92 - I have a DL-8

The present day Palmer cues with no logo are available on ebay in that price range. You will not be paying for the name but you will get just as good a quality cue as other imports like lucasi, players, fury, action and others.
The other thought is that you can also have one of your local cue repair perts customize the shaft, tip and weight to your preference.;) :)
PM me if you would like more info.
