What's going on in Florida

I think this thread has gotten off course....Anyone know why Nevel walked out on his match???

Thanks Wally

That helped me make up my mind about this situation. To protest a rule you should pull out at the players meeting. Don't wait til you're behind and quit. That just makes you look like a quitter. I assume Larry quit for the same reason. I pulled out of a tournament one time in protest of them not starting the event on time. I arrived at 10:30am, start time was 12:00, at 5:30pm I asked for my entry fee back. The tournament director said he was waiting for some guys who may want to bid in the calcutta, and since it was scheduled to be a 2 day tournament, with 29 players we wouldn't have any trouble finishing it.
I love to watch guys string racks together but, there has to be a way to get a neutral racker for the matches. The rack mechanics need to be stopped. Sam

Hi Sam,

This was not the first time the UPA used the alternate break format. Each event I've played in used it. Once you get a couple of racks behind, it is very, very difficult to come back in that format. You MUST rely on your opponent making a mistake rather than your own play. Is it fair? To a second (hopefully) tier player like myself, I like it. It keeps my matches close. To a top flight player, it keeps them from steamrolling their opponent. In the end, the cream still rises to the top. Johnny Archer won again. Most of the usual suspects were at or near the top. Enough said!

Sam, you must have the patience of a saint! No way would I have waited that long. I would also have informed the TD that it would likely be my last appearance at one of their events. No play is NOT worse than waiting for hours for non-players. Perhaps if you were the lopsided favorite, it was done intentionally.

Wally in Cincy, thanks for the information....It just goes to show how far "professional" pool will not go into the future....Corey and Larry are just plain Idiots....

Let's add that Archer won the Big Apple Nine Ball Challengein NYC in August, another alternate break event. If alternate break doesn't hold back the player having the greatest break of anybody that ever played nine ball, it shouldn't hold back Nevel or Deuel.

I kinda like the loser breaks format if the field has a lot of talent. It really frustrates a lot of the top players when they have to trade off games with someone they could give the 8 or maybe the 7 when matching up. We had a tournament in Ft. Wayne twice a year that I always played in. There were a lot of very good players who never cashed there due to the loser breaks format. The first time Mika placed real high in the US Open he showed up there and I don't think he even cashed.
I like to grind out the matches with the top players. Sam
