What's the best compliment you've ever received about your pool game?

What a great thread, toot yer own horn, I love it !

First, chefjeff, you play with a tough crowd my man ! From the sounds of it you might not want to get an iPod as a distraction (not that you need it), I can just imagine what your opponents would think of that ! And pharoh, it might be time to lose some of that niceness ;) Be mean for a change !

Two that I remember well ... I had just beat out one of our better players in a mini 9ball tournament, and my next opponent walked up to the table. The guy I beat says to the next guy "don't bother playing safe against him, he hits everything, best kicker I've seen". Another is when I came back from 7-2 to win 9-8 in league against a good player, a former room owner. He said to me "I noticed that you play the same way no matter what the score is, you don't let it bother you". I liked that one better than the kicking compliment.

Thanks for a great thread.

A very good player once complimented me...

"You almost always choose the proper ball to hit."

...in a game of 9ball. :o

The best compliment I've ever received was from the person who taught me basically everything I know about pool. He never pays compliments, just corrects you when you are wrong.

I made what I thought was a decent safety play and he looked at me and said, "Nice shot, Matt."

I almost fell down.

I don't know if this counts... which I really dislike being called, "Sandbagger". I've made numerous attempts to have my SL up'd but it's just not consistent enuff for them to do so. Hopefully the next session is coming round and hopefully they will set things str8 for once!
But if ur referring to actual compliments of my game, I guess the only ones that always come up often is having a great stroke and my safties are solid and the notion of, "U better finsih him... Cuz when he's done, ur done."

I was practicing on my own at a place that doesn't appear to get a lot of business in this area, at the table closest to the counter where they keep all the balls. The owner of the room was watching TV, but also watching me play. This was the first time I had been the the place.

After I'd been there about 2 hours, another guy walked in, watched me shoot a few shots, and asked me if I wanted to play some. When I said okay, the room owner said to the other guy, "boy, he'll beat you like a read-headed stepchild." We didn't play for anything, since I'm not a money player, but I did beat him something like 8 straight racks. I think that's the best compliment I've gotten from anyone who really knows the game.

The beginner players in my league give me some good ones every now and then. One guy said that of all the players in the room, I was the one he wanted to play like, which was interesting to me, because there are several players in there who are better than me. Another guy, at one point while I was in the middle of a run-out, said "Your cue-ball control amazes me."

I don't recall the exact line but it had something to do with a (usually) better player than myself telling me I deserved the win I just pulled out on him.

Sometimes playing so well that the other player just gets BENT is a compliment in a way, as well :P

How about you, what kind of compliments or comments have come your way that encouraged you?

when mike sigel told me i was the greatest player since himself :).

My favorite comment..

dont know if it was really a comment but..

I went to this pool hall with really tight pockets. played like the second best dude in there at the time. I had already beaten this guy, this was our second go around. i wasnt feeling it that day. i lost a couple of sets and quit. but as we started our first set the best player in there was asked by a lower level player "who you like?" the best player pointed at my opponent. i didnt really like that because i already beaten this guy. but i was playing like shit anyways, there was nothing i could do. So i came back the following week after losing and got a game with the best player. (who thinks he has a fish) and beat him 7-3 then 7-0. he never really got to shoot. when i beat him the two sets he said. " i cant beat you. " 'shakes head' that was satisfying. :p

I guess the main thing complementing my game is the fact that others are always trying to say how good they are and talk to me as if I could really learn something from them. I shoot a few races to five for kicks with them and from that day on, they will agree with anything pool related that comes out of my mouth. It's like I have a bunch of "yes men" following me around everywhere. Cracks me up all of the time...

Another good one is how everyone tries to foul me out, and if they get me, they tell everyone... It's like they think it's nearly impossible to foul me out; I love it.

Recent Encouragement

"You sure aren't going to go for $20 in the next calcutta."

After suring up 6-7th in an open event. I won my next match and took 4th.

nice thread by the way....

I was running late to league nite when my captain called and said where are you... i was in the lot i told him so he said - you're up.... I walk in and they had thrown me up and the other team was debating who to play .. then i walked in and they looked at me now recognizing who i am and looked at each other and said "what's it matter - noone on tis team can beat him anyways" So then i toasted their captain... that was a nice boost

Then i play with a guy every sunday for about a year... he has helped me with my game tremendously. One night i was shooting terrible and nearing the end i was frustrated. He looked at me and said something to the effect "don;t worry.. we've been playing for how long now? And what i see now is so much better than when we started. Your shots are more consistent and your patterns are much superior now" made a bad night into a good one

lastly, when i was in the singles states for APA i made it 5 in a row to the finals.... walked over to the table and knew who my opponent was by seeing him around that day. I walked over to the table and introduced myself as his opponent and he looked at me and said " oohhh it's you?? uh oh...i've been watching you play all day...." right then i knew i was in his head and going to Vegas !!! Which i did!

A couple compliments that stand out are:

Tim Tweedell: "Did you just see that f****** break!!! She breaks better than the boys!

Dan Louie at the old 211 in the early 90's: "I ought to take you with me to break for me." (Since then his break has improved 100% and mine has gone down. :( )

JD: "She sure shoots straight!"

I think one of the biggest compliments I got was at the IPT and had a tough runout where I had to play an intricate speed shot with only a couple inches to play shape on a short side 8 ball and John Schmidt was watching. When I did it, the whole crowd he was sitting with cheered me on, and later he told me how good I played. Now those are words I will take to the grave! :D

Compliments from a World Champion and a National Champion? Big deal! No really, that has to feel great.

Actually, I received a compliment (by proxy) from Dan also. I was talking to an older gentleman about Dan Louie at a tourney one time, and when he asked my name, he said "Oh yeah, I heard about you, Dan says you're a great young player." Made me feel 10 feet tall.

Another time, I was playing James Walden in a weekly tournament, and he kept hooking me with excellent safeties, but I kept getting good hits on my ball and leaving it tough for him. He said "Damn, I can't hook this kid!, He hits everything!" Coming from one of the best players I have ever seen, that was unimaginable.

Lastly, I met this old guy at a local bar called the Half Time in Vancouver, WA. He introduced himself after watching me play (after I took some money from a guy), and when I told him my name, he stated "Yeah I heard about you." He explained that he had asked another older man at a place called Oscar's on the other side of town who the best players in town were. Not that the guy wanted some action, but he loved the game and wanted to sweat some. He was told "Well, there is this younger guy that hangs out at Half Time, he plays real good."

I had been in WA a couple months, and a respectable older man said I was one of the best players around the area. Huge ego boost.

Too bad everyone and their dog wants a piece of me, and I haven't the game to back it up right now due to lack of time for practice.

lol... thats a funny quote hemi... one day i will hear that from a champion...

my biggest compliment recently came last weekend at a tournament... i went for 25 or 30 bucks in the calcutta... lost my 2nd match to a guy that played pretty well and got all the rolls and went through the one loss side to make it to the finals against "the local hero"... lol as i was rolling through my opponents i kept hearing poeple say things like "who is this kid" and "how much did he go for again" and when i locked up 2nd place one of the poeple watching told me that "they would make sure i never went that cheap in the calcutta"... but my biggest compliment was from the stakehorse of the player i played in the finals... he said "damn... this kid plays like a demon"... (i was fortunate enough to catch dead stroke in the tourny)

I was playing in a B level tournament(9-ball) (I'm a C player) and I was consistently making runs of 6 or 7 balls against a few players and they all told me that my level class is not right for me and that I should go play in A. It felt good hearing that honestly.

I've got two that stick out in my mind.

I was playing a 8 ball match and we were hill to hill, I broke, nothing on the break and the other guy ran out, won the match . I said "nice run" to which he replied, "I had to, I didn't want you back on the table."

After a 14.1 match one night, the person I was playing said "I heard you were tough and they were right."

I've gotten a few over the years but once time sticks in my head. I was playing inna local 9-Ball tournament a few years ago and during my warm up Danny Diliberto sat on the rail and did his "comentary" while I shot. Several times he shouted " ya see that?" or "no one hits em that good". Now knowing Danny for as long as I do I took it as him being Danny but I was hitting them pretty sporty!!! HAHAHAHA

I've got a couple.

When receiving lesson from Hillbilly after he had taught a class to about 10 guys at one of the local poolhalls, he said, "You picked up on all of this stuff quicker than every guy I was with yesterday, and you understand it all. It normally takes others 3 or 4 lessons before they get it." I consider this a great compliment coming from a great player and nice guy.

Probably one of the top 3 players in the city I live in has said on several occasions to different people, "Man, if I had his break, I could give anybody the 6 out."

He also gave me one of the best character compliments of my life. He was speaking to someone else sitting by watching me shoot and said, "I'll give you the 8 if you break for me." A waitress walking by said, "Are you kidding, he wouldn't have to break right and you'd be screwed." He replied, "It's not in him to do that."

Great thread!

The best one I got was recently when one of the better players in Richmond mentioned to me that he had rededicated himself to the game and was now spending far more time practicing. And that was due to the fact that I'd taken him out of the State 9 Ball championships the prior summer. He'd seen how much my game had stepped up and he wanted to do the same. That felt good!

I've taken to playing in a local 8 ball tournament here on Friday nights. I've shown up about half the time for the past 3 months. Several of the better players have said to me that they can't believe I haven't won the thing yet. It's good to get recognition from players that you perceive to be better. :) It also means, I'm getting into their heads. I like that!

Brian in VA - enjoying the journey!
